Omg the software forum! I dont come in here often... it looks scary.

Anyway, i was wondering if there is a way to password protect specific Folders in Windows, specifically XP.

I did a bit of googling and apparently there is some third party software you can use but seeing as ive had no experience with this i'd thought i'd ask here first.

Does anyone know the best way to go about this? What i basically want is some sort of box that pops up and asks for a password when you try to open a specific Folder.

Thanks in advance.

Put all your porn in an encrypted container, check out truecrypt (basically software that will do as suggested above).

Don't see much point in passworded windows folders, they're not exactly re-knowned for implementing decent security policies...

Not to mention they wouldn't use a proper algorithm, they'd use some bastardised proprietry pants that they designed with the sole purpose of having backdoors for those who 'need' to see what you are passwording.

the reason they don't have them is because noobs in large business forget passwords then give the IT admin a headache

Depends if you need local admin rights to do it, and how the system is configured.

Most users would do as they do their user account, put a bloody post it where they can see it with the password on:S

I could be way wrong but I have a clear memory of being able to right click and select encrypt on 98, that might of had some third party software installed but not that i remember!

EDIT: just dusted off and fired up a 98 laptop. I was wrong! Guess it would be odd if they just randomly took away a feature

lockbox for password protected folders, its not 100% secure, but it keeps out prying eyes, unless they have a spare few mins and full system access...

Don't go password protecting windows folders though, just tell your friend not to be retarded and mess around with things they don't understand. Make some shortcuts to Documents/Pictures/Music etc... an tell them don't stray from that line....

You don't need a third party application as there is built-in "protection" on certain directories.

Give him his own account and store all your pr0n in any subdirectory under \Documents and Settings\your_user_account directory. If anyone tries to access that directory from another account they will get an "Access is denied" error.
