Hi,
I'm currently wanting to upgrade to leopard from tiger, just wondering if I did the upgrade would all my saved passwords be stored or wiped away?
I ask because there are one or two passwords which I have forgotten and just rely on the auto complete to fill it in :s So it's pretty necessary.

TIA

Michael

Go to Applications => Utilities => Keychain Access

Double click on one of the keychain items you want to find out about, and then tick the "Show password" checkbox. It will ask you for the Admin password, and then it will appear in the box. This way you can find out all of your passwords that you don't know, just incase. ;)

After upgrading to Leopard, go buy 1Password. I have it and it's great. I use if for everything, and it integrates with most of the popular browsers. Highly recommend it.

Hope that helped. :)

Don't see why they wouldn't be kept if you do an upgrade-install. The entire keychain is stored in a single .keychain file so you can always whack that on to an external drive beforehand, just in case.

Upgrade will keep the keychain passwords and all user settings. Of course you have a full backup just in case it all goes wrong so no worries there then eh?

I had stability problems after upgrading the Factory Tiger install to Leopard, so I'd recommend a format and reinstall from scratch.

Upgrade will keep your passwords etc, but a clean install is better for your system, avoids problems with third party apps messing up the install.

Do what Rambo said to look at your passwords and take a record.

Did you read my post...?

=/

yep, did read it and that involves me writing down all the passwords, just wondering if there was a way of transfering them automatically. I've also checked out 1password and it's very good, am going to buy it.
Just wondering if there was an easier to restore passwords without having to wrote them down.

Read the next post then. All of the saved passwords are stored inside a single file that can simply be copy-pasted in to the new OS install.

(login.keychain is the file name by default, IIRC)

thanks, wasn't aware if leopard could use the previous os keychain file or not.

Will give it a try.

Yeah, it should work. If anything goes wrong, use a backup of the keychain. Quoted from Apple website:

Keychains
Keychains are located in your ~/Library/Keychains/ folder. To get to this file in the Finder, choose Home from the Go menu. Open the Library folder, then open the Keychains folder.

Tip: Before you back up your keychains, use Keychain First Aid to repair any issues.

To back up:
Make copies of your keychain files in a different location by Option-dragging each file to a desired location. Do not remove the originals. You can also use the Finder to create an archive as described in the Safari Bookmarks section, above.

To restore:
In the Finder, from the Go menu, choose Utilities.
Open Keychain Access.
From the Edit menu, choose Keychain List. A dialog appears, listing all keychain files.
Deselect the keychains that you wish to restore, then click OK.
Quit Keychain Access.
Move your keychain back up files back to ~/Library/Keychains/.
Open Keychain Access again.
From the Edit menu, choose Keychain List.
Select the keychains that you wish to use, then click OK.

Then buy 1Password. :P
