Cornish pasties have been given protected status by the European Commission.
...
Following a nine-year campaign by producers, the Cornish pasty has been given Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status - elevating it to a culinary pedestal alongside Camembert cheese and Parma ham.
...
The pasty itself should be made up of at least 12.5% meat. (BBC online)
By meat, I assume they include anything at all that can be "recovered" from a carcass by means of an AMR system :(

No self-respecting Cornishman would ever call it a Cornish pasty anyway. It's just 'pasty'. Nobody should be allowed to use the word Cornish in front of pasty, as this would give rise to the perception that there's some other sort of pasty that matters.
Also, BBC, it's not swede. It's turnip.

Also no self respecting cornishman calls it a pasty, despite the disambiguation.

It's a 'pastie' :p

Mmmm pastie, damn this diet.

I wonder what the The Cornish Pasty Shop in Cambridge will call itself now?

Cornish pastys are foul.

I'd be quite happy to let Cornwall keep them.

I could say the same thing about many other regional specialities from around the country. It's not as if anybody is forcing you to eat them.

About bloody time this happened. Maybe the supermarkets will stop branding their crap imposters as Cornish Pasties when they are nothing of the sort. A Cornish Pasty is made from shortcrust pastry, potato, turnip and steak with some seasoning. None of this puff pastry, potato, swede, carrots and mince rubbish!! I can't remember if it was Asda's or Tesco's now but one of them even had peas in them!!

i was kinda hoping for some sort of thread about the eu approving of some hot Asian and then violently smashing her pasty, but i guess we can't all have what we want

Shame it won't stop Ginsters making their nasty versions as they are actually in Cornwall.
