I know what Patch Cabinets are and what they are used for.

But how do they work. The signal comes in on one switch and then passes it to another switch which patches a port. Or have I got this completely wrong

A patch cabinet it generally where all your structure cabling (floor ports or wall mounted network points) terminate. Sometimes you can find switches or other network stuff in them, but sometimes they're housed in the next cabinet along.

Generally switch > port, but it depends on your networks topology....

Our could be core > Switch> Switch> Switch>User or Core>Switch user depending on spanning tree....

I help with the IT at school and the patch cabs are horrible.

When I finish early as im in Year 11 the school are taking me on for 8 week contract work and i feel the patch cabs will be the focus of attention for me!
