Was putting together an idea in my head so that when i eventually move into my own place and am allowed, was going to run Cat 6 cables in each room back to a central switch.

the only thing i was wondering is.....is it worth it fitting a patch panel there or just straight terminating the cables and plugging into relevant switch ports?

My feeling is to go with straight terminations, but then one side of me is looking at the fact that i can re-patch cable easily in case one port goes Tango Uniform on me

Nothing wrong with using patch panels if you have somewhere to mount them, like a comm's cabinet. Entirely up to you and depends on what sort of set-up you want.

Although it depends if you want a comms cabinet and a patch panel in view, if you can hide it away in a cupboard out of sight then go for it.

I put a patch panel in when I moved in 12 years ago and haven't really needed to do much actual patching (averages out at less than once a year!)... in hindsight just straight terminating would have been the way to go.

*Most* stuff on my network is wireless these days anyways.
