I built my first pc a couple of months ago, basically the other day when I hit the power button to start it up the fans started to spin for a milisecond then stopped. Of course my heart sank and I thought £$%^ ;) I mean damn it! But then after about 2-3 seconds the fans/hdd all started to spin up as normal and the system POSTed and booted up fine. So I put it down to a freak occurance, but it has now been doing the same since and I would really like to know what is causing this problem and if it might be a serious issue. Anyone got any ideas?

Regards

mmm, you get this a lot, random fans spinning when you power on etc. Not really sure what causes it, the only thing Id suggest is see if there is a BIOS update available...althouhg a bit risky procedure to do on the chance it might fix it.

Could be down to your PSU

No its an asus maximus formula, so I guess it's not limited to any particular motherboard manufacturer, did you ever manage to sort it out MeatLoaf? J.B. you might be right about the PSU because it appears to happen before the motherboard has gone about his POST but then again I don't fully understand the process at startup. I imagine it goes something like: press power button>goes the motherboard>triggers green wire? on 24pin connector>tells psu to power up>psu powers system>etc... Could be motherboard, or psu or maybe power switch on case? Really not sure. I have checked the connection on the header and its tight. It's like a delayed response because the fans do initally whir but then stop so they must receive power for at least a short period of time???
