When I run most games and im playing through them or in a multiplayer map for the first few minutes it will play smooth but get sudden jerks/pauses. I have just ran a few doom 3 benchmarks and found the following

1280x1024 high detail 8xAF 0xAA
First time ran -90fps
Second time ran -119.1fps

1600x1200 ultra detail 0xAF 4xAA
First time ran -47.4fps
Second time ran -57.7fps

1600x1200 ultra detail 16xAF 4xAA
First time ran -50.5fps
Second time ran -57.5fps

a. why doesnt the 16xAF seem to be doing much to my fps
b. why are the pauses happening as it is so annoying and is shown in my fps

I want it to be like the second time ran but all the time! I have defragged only a couple of days ago

edit - my 3dmarks are spot on

Your Doom 3 benchmark is running smoother second time because the demo is loaded into your RAM. You can get the game to precache the timedemo but I can't remember the console command for it, have a google. As for 16xAF it seems it is not active, either Doom3 doesn't support 16xAF or you have set it in the driver and it needs to be set in the game instead.

Not sure about your more general problem with your games stuttering, you have 2Gb of RAM so that shouldn't be a problem (are your RAM timings set properly?). Maybe you are running your graphics texture details too high, try setting it lower. I see you have a X1800XT but some games like Doom 3 need 512Mb Graphics RAM for Ultra high textures.

A friend had a similar problem with a stutter or hang every 30secs or so, it turned out to be his Wireless network card, so dont rule out other hardware.

Do you have any sort of anti virus/firewall that kind of stuff.

Unplug the internet and disable it all and see if that cures the issue.

hmmmm, interseting. Ill try this when i get in. I *think* i just have my ram running at default settings (3-4-4-8 252mhz) ill check those aswell though when i get in. thanks.

none of my 3dmarks stutter or anything. i thought i might need a raptor/scsi drive but maybe not

When you have ultra settings enabled 16xAF is on as default, if you have set AF to application preference rather than a lower setting 16xAF will still be on. Same applies for high settings and 8xAF.

How many more times am i going to have to tell you untill you listen?

Our cards CANNOT HANDLE over 256mb of video memory and that is what the Ultra Mode in doom3 has. So you'll get poor FPS, jitters, pauses, the lot.
