Hey folks, my house does not really have much in terms of a patio in the garden, it has a small (3x3m) extension off the lounge, which would have been a patio before that was put on it, however, there is a 'square' area next to it, that still has the original concrete, so a little area for a table/chairs. However I wanted to put about 8ft (if you are standing at the end of the extension door looking out into the garden) worth of slabs, and then of course have those slabs go from fence to fence either side and then also in that little 'square' area, and ultimately to the back gate, as the house has a side entrance.
I do need to measure it myself fully, but I would say at a guess, it's around 25 sq m worth of materials needed.

Slab-wise was not too bothered, even the usual homebase or B&Q slabs would be fine, just not the grey concrete slabs that you see on new homes.
Quotes seemed to vary massively, in fact, laughably so, we had one quote for £5000 (!) another for £2600, another for £1700, who then added on £600 to do the pathway to the gate as he had forgotten to include that (bear in mind the pathway is 1m wide x 5m long)

£1700 seemed a reasonable price initially (and of course until he added £600 to do the path bit) until a few friends said it was expensive, but inevitably never backed that up with any solution or ideas, just 'that's expensive'

The job itself would require taking up some old concrete and also the '8ft' out from the extension part is grass, so some grass and concrete removal, then laying the new slabs, do they quotes above seem excessive?

Materials wise i've looked around, and for 25sqm (which is probably too much but I over-estimate rather than under) of slabs are about £750-800 maximum, sand etc probably won't be much, so is it really a job that justifies £1000+ of labour??? I did think about doing it myself, or attempting it, but I suspect it would be a complete and utter bodge job so would probably avoid doing it.

By this 'paint' drawing you can see I am totally wasted in my current job, and should clearly be doing CAD work or some sort of sophisticated design due to the amazing quality of my art... :D :D

Current 'layout'

Where grey is just basic 1970s laid concrete, this would be replaced with patio slabs, and the arrows are where I would bring the new patio up to.
The side path ending just a little bit 'behind' the extension, with the gate.

My 2p's worth...ive been quoted £2250 for a 30 sqm with Slate Slabs....all in.
Thats digging and getting rid of the dated grey slabs that currently site there and down the side of our house (side access)..so pretty much the same as you.

I would say thats reasonable, these guys are great as they did our front drive 80 sqm of Woburn Rumble for £4500.

If your in Herts i can i give you there number. Really nice blokes and set everything out for you. Flexible as well

As a guide they will be using our old slabs for a shed base, installing sleepers down the sides of our garden with shingle and installing 10 fence panels with concrete posts for an additional £1250.

Great.

Hmmm that does seem a good price for your work, I am in Essex so we are both in the overpriced tradesmen(!) part of the country, front drive is a good quote - I did have a quote on ours for about £5000 but that's for another time, year, years etc !

These guys are based in Dunstable but travelled 20 miles to me. So they may travel to you.

Yes just had the Central Heating installed for £5.5k and i believe they may have made around £3k labour, but it was a decent price considering they had to rip out the air flow system.

I just did my own, used around 18m2 of 300x300 flags to do a patio, drainage & path, that took 3 ton of aggregate, 1 ton of sand and about 15 bags of cement (it's in a dip so I made a more concrete type of base the usual stone/crush run). Also built a retaining wall capped by the same flags for the garden, that took 1 pack bricks, 1 pack of blocks, about 15 bags of cement and 3ton of stone, 2 ton of sand (dug a 300mm deep foundation for the wall and made my own concrete). Put in 5t of soil and 50m2 of turf for the garden. Materials and equipment for the job were around £1200. Took around 8 weeks of evening and weekend work to do.

The flags were an end run from Marshalls, got them in their eBay outlet, from the local garden centre a close match from the same firm were over £700 for 18m2 plus £50 delivery, the eBay outlet I got 22.5m2 delivered for £250 (min order was 5 packs for free delivery).

That's in Leeds by the way. And no, I wouldn't do it myself again, I was a broken man at the end of it having also taken out 8t of soil/clay from the garden from the extension we had done and the layout for the patio I made.

I pretty much had the same as this. I'm at work at the moment but when I get home I'll post some pictures to show the epicness of the task.

Fair play to you sir....but to save £1k....i dont think being broken and 8 weeks of sheer torture is up my street...id rather pay £1k :-) Mind i wouldnt have the sense of achievement factor you must have :-)

Lets see some pics then lads.

You're hired!! :D
For the part of the country you're in, I don't think £2300 is unreasonable for all the work and materials.

Obviously you have had a few quotes. Maybe get a few more? Anyone that can recommend someone to you?

Dear God...

Just digging for shed base left me broken. Clay is evil.

Its amazing how much soil even comes out of a small hole! I know as i have dug many over the years!!

Quoted for the truth - we dug out 45 tonnes of the stuff. By hand. And then we had to deadlift and empty each wheelbarrow full into a 5ft high farm trailer. Not sure how I survived tbh.

The lesson I learned - when it comes to clay, whatever you think there is, multiple it by four. As soon as you disturb clay it fluffs up completely.

I have just completed laying my new patio.... I can confirm the above is true, the digging out is horrendous but once that is out of the way the rest came on really quickly.

The previous patio left by the house builders was just laid straight onto the clay!

All in mine set me back £850 which covered 22m2.

See below for a time lapse of the slabs finally being laid (the easier bit!!)

I did a small one myself, I used some old slabs that were left in the garden, just gave them a quick jetwash first. My only costs were 175kg of sub base, 175kg of sharp sand and 25kg of cement. So about £30 of materials to do it. I had a pond to fill in with the top soil I removed so that saved a lot of hassle. There was loads of rubbish from the extension under the ground so that saved me on sub base as it was rock solid underneath. We have very clay like soil that makes from hard digging and crap drainage. I used gravel between the house and the patio to help with drainage. I have finished the pointing since taking this photo. I think if I had a large area to do I would consider paying someone as this was fairly hard going on my own. Also the only garden access is through the house, I think if I had more materials to do a larger area this would have caused problems!

Here is the plan:

And here is the progress:

It's going to be about 20m^2 and I estimate the total cost of materials to be just under £1000. For the amount of time and effort it has taken so far, I would say that paying someone £1000 for labour would probably be worth it, although personally I gain a lot of satisfaction from doing it myself.
