Has anyone got any experience of the Norwich Union Pay-As-You-Drive scheme?

I am about to renew my policy and was thinking about this insurance.

However, having got an on-line quote, it doesn't seem any cheaper than the insurance I am currently using and is more expensive than alternative quotes I have obtained on-line.

What is the point of Pay-As-You-Drive? What (if any) is its USP?

It depends how much you drive/where/what time and how old you are.

If you are young and drive a long way late at night its £££

To save you time we base your quote on some assumptions, please confirm that you meet these criteria

  • No driver of the car is a professional sports person, actor, actress, model, circus / fairground worker or anyone connected with the entertainment industry
  • Your car is not an Audi A8

what descriminating against clowns driving A8's how dare they lol.

but seriously whats up with the A8 part.

Absolutely useless insurer, wont quote on anything remotely worthwhile for anyone even slightly young

I realise that it is going to depend on actual usage, but when I experimented with putting in different details, it seems that it is never significantly cheaper than other forms of insurance.

Perhaps the cost of fitting the logging device bumps it up more than the £50 they charge

No problem there ;)

for me its working out way cheaper than anything else I could get
19
just passed
1litre polo
and people wanted £1600-£2000

went with NU payd, fitting etc was all free and starter price discounted cos my dad works for NU

won't go with it next year though, I don't drive a whole lot at the moment so will work out OK but with a years no claims I'll get 'normal' insurance

Yep

We will collect the date, time of day, location (in terms of longitude and latitude to be able to determine where your car is), speed and direction that you are driving.

True, in relation to speed at least. Not sure what you mean by "other rather dangerous pieces of information".

There are mentions of the speeding issue on the Internet and comments that the result is that one might be penalised for having an accident whilst "speeding safely" whilst not being penalised for doing so when driving like a lunatic but within the speed limit.

I of course, do the former but not the latter - clearly I would have to change my style of driving ;)

:S what? thats rediculously high?
I had cheaper quotes (fully comp) on my 2.0 Golf GTI. (im also 19, had licence for a year but 0 ncb and 0 experiance)

That does sound really high, I passed my test at 17 and got A Peugeot 106 1.1, cheapest I found for that was £1500 and I thought that was high! Direct Line worked out the cheapest for that car.

different group for a Polo thats why, higher cost of repairs-better quality build and safer

You guys need to shop around. I'm paying £897 to insure my 2006 Seat Ibiza TDi sport, and I'm 19, 1 NCB. It was £1200 when I was 18 with 0 NCB.
