Has anyone got good advice on what one to get? Have a friend who wants one for his laptop, he doesnt really use the net much. He would probably only use it to surf the net (probably not even youtube). The only downloading he would do would be Win7 patches.

Ive no idea what contracts you can get. Maybe a years net or a monthly download allowance for a fixed fee?

Vodaphone - Top-ups never expire on a pay-as-you-go.

Generally 1Gb = £10. AFAIK vodaphone are the only ones who charge per gb as opposed to per month with a maximum of 1gb.

T-mobile do a year with a dongle for £149.99 with unlimited browsing. Fair use of 2gb a month but no extra charges if you go over, just throttling during peak times of 4pm - 12 midnight. :)

Is that throttling only put in place if you go over the 2gb fair use?

Yes, it basically just restricts you to browsing. Watching videos and downloading things becomes nigh on impossible, but browsing is fine.

It just restricts you for the remainder of the month from when you go over.

While I don't like them as a company very much, my experience has been that Vodafone offer the best data services in terms of speed and reliability. That may vary by area but I've never had major problems anywhere.

Is this deal still available?
I have looked over xmas and it seems they have changed to be like all the others i.e. pay monthly or topups run out after 30 days :)

Hi ANDARIAL,

The reason that you have noticed these changes is that on the 26th Dec '09 Vodafone introduced a tariff refresh to our mobile broadband. This will mean that all dongles purchased from Voda after this date will carry a 30 day expiry on top ups.

There is however, still a way to get your hands on a "No expiry" Top Up and Go dongle and that is by going through a 3rd party like Tesco. :) (Other indirect resellers are available!)

They will still be selling these dongles until the 4th January.

Anyone who purchased a Top Up & Go Dongle before the 26th (Or the 4th Jan '10 from indirect channels.) will remain on the "No Expiry" proposition.

I trust that this helps,
