If you can bare with me on this i will try to explain the best i can.
I am a union rep in my work. every year i attend the national wage negotiations. generally it hovers around 2.8 to 3.2 percent every year.
To talk about your hourly rate is a bit taboo, some people do it some dont.
It came to light that 2 members of staff who had been with the company just over 2 years were being paid 26 pence per hour less than everyone else. i spoke to the manager and the union full time official and we just couldnt figure it out. the guys do the same job as everyone else, we dont have any kind of seniority bonus in place.
after a few weeks the manager called me into the office to show me a document. This is a form that he completes on the 1st day of employment for a new employee. it states in bold that any employee starting on or after the 1st of october shall not receive that years pay increase.
Part of me agrees with this, why should a new start receive a pay rise when they have not contributed to the company's success from the previous year.
But the other part of me thinks why shouldnt the men be paid equally for doing the same job.
what are other peoples thoughts on this?
