I bought it a few years back. Still lots of updates coming out. They try to get you to buy the dlc but you don't need to. You can just join someone elses game that has it.

All DLC has been made unavailable (afaik) while they are working on bundling it all up in to an "Ultimate Edition" of the game so I'm guessing turning the game F2P or rather giving away 5 million copies away for free will hopefully garner enough interest for people to shell out once they release the ultimate edition add on.
