I keep a 3G dongle plugged into a cruddy 12v router for internet access in the event of either my internet dropping out, or a power failure, but at the moment I use a "3" mobile internet SIM on a PAYG basis. The problem is that the data expires every 30 days.

Are there any networks or MVNOs that have a longer (or better, no) expiry on topped up data allowances?

The actual network doesn't matter too much, as I can get a signal on all of the major networks here.

Have you looked at ovivo
Free 750mb data a month
As it doesn't sound like you use a lot, sim costs £20 but £15(or at least on the phone deals,I assume data sims would be the same) goes on to your balance.
You do have to put up with adds as its free, but if its infrequent use its not bad at all. And thats only in webrowser, use data on maps and other apps you wont see apps. Its what i use in my spare phone i use for gps/backup.

If you don’t use your phone for 60 days, the account will enter a “Suspended” state in our system. This means that you can still use the service, your credit balance is still intact, but you will need to contact us to re-enable your account, which we would do free of charge.

If, you are inactive for a further 120 days (180 in total), your account is “Deactivated”. It can still be reactivated, but there may be a charge for this and you would need to contact us to re-active your account for you. Your credit balance is still there at not lost at this stage.

If, you are inactive for a further 180 days (360 in total), your account will be deleted from our system, any credit balance will be deleted and your number may also be lost from our systems. In effect, this is the point at which your service with us is completely closed.

I have, but the problem I have with that is I'm unsure whether any traffic will flow at all if no-one is around to view the initial advertising.

If you physically have to be there to start a browsing session (like with many free WiFi hotspots utilizing a captive portal), then it's unfortunately no use :(

Im not sure what you mean?
Data for all apps works with no adverts, if you launch browser advert pops up and after 5seconds you click next.

Well for example, my regular WAN fails and my traffic is sent out over the USB dongle, will my SMTP server still be able to email out, even though no-one has opened a browser and clicked Continue? My LAN has automatic failover to the 3G router, and I have services that need to be able to keep running even if there is no-one in the building!

I was under the impression that all data use was "captive" (ie, held within the confines of ovivo's network) until such time as an advert had been viewed and Continue had been clicked.

On a phone/tablet all apps work all the time, without adverts, its only webrowser which activates an advert, don't use webrowser you never have to see an advert.
How it works on a dongle with a computer I have no idea. As i don't know how it distinguishes between data for apps and data for webroswer.
