My new contract phone arrived with much easier to remember number, so I decided not to port my old number over. However, considering people are lazy when it comes to updating details regardless of how many times you page them I would like to use PAC code from my old number and port it to Pay As You Go, then just record voicemail "Hi, this is v0n, you can reach me on my new number 555 111 010" to let callers know where to find me. I wouldn't be using PAYG for anything else, so I was wondering if any of you could suggest any PAYG, other than Orange (my old number is on Orange, you can't migrate numbers within network), that has NO minimum periodical top up requirement and no top up expiration - in other words, PAYG that I can just top up for £10, port the number, record voicemail intro, switch off the phone and it will remain active for the longest possible time and it won't switch me off after a month or three months for not topping up or 0 balance...

You can move the number from Orange contract to Orange PAYG without any problems at all. Just phone up and ask, and a PAYG sim will be sent within 30 days, you phone up and register it with the same number.

Jobs a goodun.

Orange however needs "£10 or more" topup a month, if I understand their website correctly (whatever happened to just plain tarrif info on all those sites)...

No they don't, the £10 a month or more applied to the promotional parts of the tarriffs (such as the texts). The number will stay active for a good long while with a small amount of credit on it :)
