Guy I work with has a PAYG O2 phone and wants to upgrade to a contract and get a new phone.

Does he have to stay with O2 to keep his number? I only ask because he also wants a phone that can do internet, music and all that caper so I suggested a HTC Desire (I got a HTC Desire HD, 200 mins, unlimited texts, 500mb usage for £15+vat 24 months plus £50 for the phone - didn't think that was too bad)

O2 can't seem to get anywhere near that even with the Desire. Is it possible to move provider and retain the number?

It is possible to keep his number while moving networks. All he has to do is to contact O2 and ask for a Porting Authorisation Code or PAC code. He then puchases a new contract and once he gets it, he can call the new network with the PAC code and the temporary number that came with the contract and ask to keep his number.

PS. Where did you get your contract from? I'm thinking of getting a Desire HD myself soon! Sounds like a good deal!

I just rang Orange after my contract had expired and rather than choosing the upgrade line I chose the "Think of leaving us" line - on the basis that I assume they'd be more willing to give good deals.

The HD was not in stock but they gave me the offer on the Desire. I asked if I could have the HD and the lad said I could but would have to pay £50. I'd rather pay the up front payment than having a higher tariff so that suited me. I don't sit on the phone for ages so 200 mins is fine. Don't think I'll go over the 500mb usage as it uses my PC in work to connect to the net and our WiFi at home.

The chap I work with has no knowledge of gadgets but wants to make an attempt at this 21st century lark :) He wants it for phone, music, email etc so I thought the desire would probably suit - if not be a bit too much in fact.

O2 would only offer £25 on 300 mins, unlim texts, 500mb and a Desire over 24 months.
