Well, I've sold something else on ebay for a substantial amount, and PayPal seem to be holding my takings until I recieve positive feedback or till 21 days passes with no claims/disputes filed.

Now I've had a bad experience with PayPal before see:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17986923&highlight=gam3r

I just want to take precautions this time, I'm very much against sending it first and then recieving the payment..

I've done some searching and read that you can refund the buyer 1p and release the rest of the funds, does this trick still work?

I've also messaged him explaining the situation and asking him to leave positive feedback asap, but waiting for a reply.

Am I just over-reacting to this? Or do things generally go ok? I just don't want to loose the item in question.

Many thanks :)

This is a new "initiative" by PayPal/eBay to try and protect buyers from being scammed. They kind of forgot about it working the other way round though.

As far as I know the 1p trick no longer works.

Happens to me loads. I just politely ask the person to leave positive feedback as soon as they are happy with the item. Always have got prompt positive feedback.

Had same happen to me recently.

Sold a hd 3850 for 94. Paypal funds on hold. Buyer said would install then leave feedback the day they got it but turns out not as expected. No feedback, no contact i.e messages with no replies, no answer to the mobile after i got it off ebay. I need the funds asap to buy a cpu from someone here on the mm.

Its really p*****g me rite off.

Any advice?

Edit, hmm just read this source

When will PayPal release the payment hold for an eBay item?

Your funds will be released after 21 days. We may release funds earlier when one of the following occurs:

* The buyer leaves you positive feedback on eBay
* 3 days pass after we confirm the item was delivered*

If you receive a dispute, claim, chargeback, or reversal on the transaction subject to the eBay item hold, we may hold the payment until the problem is resolved, even if the claim, chargeback, or reversal occurs after the hold is released.

Hope its true and i get the money tomorrow as it will be 3 days after it was confimed delivered. (yep told them the tracking info).

You get your money as soon as the buyer leaves pos feedback, I sold something yesterday, sent it yesterday and got the funds released today immediately after they left feedback (after recieving the item obviously). This system is a little dumb but you just have to take precautions with some buyers, but majorally it works out fine!

that really sucks. i hardly ever leave feedback (can't be bothered) so with this the seller will have to wait.

I had this last month. took 27 days to be released and 5 snotty emails to paypal. The guy i sold to had 221 positive feedback but ignored all 5 emails i sent him asking for him to leave positive feedback, even though he recieved the delivery confirmed by digital signature, the day after he paid for it. Of course, i'd already left him positive feedback because, well, i had no sodding choice.

In lighter news, when i phoned paypal the nice Philipino lady i spoke to said that the funds that are withheld are in Paypals account, not the buyers account, and so i would definately recieve it (presuming no neg feedback) and that he couldn't initiate a chargeback, although this is contrary to what it says on the website in that he can initiate a chargeback. So really, nobody knows who can do what. Not even PayPal.

Basically i've completely lost faith in PayPal and shall never buy or sell on that auction site again. The MM is far superior in every way.

So many drama queens, dear me.

Buyers are not obligated to leave feedback and badgering them to do so is never wise, you may find yourself with a negative.

OH noes! a negative! say it aint so! :(

To be honest, if i have taken the time to leave feedback for him, then he can do it for me. It's less than 10 seconds of his time. Whereas, it was more than ten seconds of my time and certainly FAR more than the quoted postage cost to send the item next day rather than standard 2 - 3 day as indicated on the auction to ensure he had an extra good service.

I dont know, i guess i'm just polite and a exceptionally good trader if i'm the only person who thinks that you should leave positive feedback for a good service. More reason to never use that service again.

You aren't that exceptionally good if you keep badgering buyers for feedback. I have never done that. Most buyers leave feedback, some very quickly, others after a week or a few weeks, some never. That is how it goes. They are under no obligation to do so whatsoever, actual or moral.

Personally I always leave prompt feedback whether buying or selling but I don't get upset when others don't :)

21 days to wait if you are a light user (no waiting period for regular sellers) is a bit of a pain I daresay, but it protects everyone and helps make ebay a safer place for all and reduces fraud.

Oh, i'm sorry, i didn't realise we were all supposed to follow your example of how to be a good citizen. Sec, bend over and i'll wipe your backside for you.

Really? Reduces fraud?
I mean, seriously? Are you suggesting that this scenario has reduced the possibility of fraud? Do you need to think about that or would you like me to explain?
Just in case:
Old system: I sell item that is 100% perfect and as described, give bonus postage and am generally the excellent seller that i pride myself on being. Buyer bought the wrong item, thought it was something else, wets his pants and leaves negative feedback blaming me for his mistake. Oh noes. Negatives because he's a moron! nevermind.

I'm (in this case) over £200 out of pocket, and i'm missing a £200 item that is in 100% condition.

You would hope so but paypals protection seems to only benefit the fraudulent and **** everyone else off :(

I think the only way to use paypal is for payments under £10, that way you're less likely to get scammed and paypal to hog the money for weeks

Leaving a negative doesn't mean you don't recieve the money. He has to initiate a claim, and if he wins, just like the old system you lose the money.

Its to stop people selling the item, recieving thefunds and then immediately withdrawing the money and leaving paypal to pick up the tab.

I've had this 3 times now, I refund them the money then kindly ask if they would re-send the payment, it then works as your not doing it via ebay then.

Naughty. I bet you ask them to do it via your special link? If you did it to me I'd resend it via the ebay website.
