Hi, I sold my Google pixel 2 xl via eBay today, the guy paid via PayPal, I log in to transfer the money into my bank account, but it days the money is on hold until February the 14th, any idea why? Obviously I will not be sending the phone at the moment. Is this a scam?

When you sell an item and your buyer uses PayPal to pay you, PayPal sometimes holds that payment until they're sure the buyer is satisfied. A payment hold doesn't mean you've done anything wrong. There are several reasons a payment might be held.

Most likely you dont use paypal often to sell so they are keeping funds back incase of a claim (for a set amount of time), can always call paypal to confirm however if you are concerned.

I am not new on ebay, been using it 10 plus years, don't sell that often, but buy something on ebay every week. I am not sending it without the funds being released.

Just apologise, explain why and refund the buyer if concerned.

Otherwise providing you ship it royal mail special delivery and add the tracking number on the sold item, eBay pulls through delivery confirmation and you will prob get funds released in 3-7 days. RMSD seems to pull through the eBay system much quicker than other delivery options and some couriers never get recognised. Even quicker is if you book the RMSD via eBay print label service. Usually they release the funds within a couple of days of delivery receipt.

You may not like it, but that's the way it is.

They do this on items for a number of causes including (not an exhaustive list): a) if you don't have PayPal balance on account which part or fully covers the goods value in addition to the item that's just sold, b) if the buyer has a new payment card, c) if the buyer has raised disputes or instigated chargebacks previously, d) if you have raised disputes as a buyer or seller, e) if you withdraw money from buyer to your bank immediately every time you get paid and f) if you or the seller just don't meet their risk profile.

It's all automated inc the link with your eBay account so you can't win on this.

Same thing happened to us recently, sold something for £500 on Ebay but because money doesn't go into my partner's Paypal account often, they held the funds for 30 days. Pain in the backside but I see why they do it.

Surely just post the item and upload a tracking number? Not sure what the issue is really.

Do you need the money that urgently? I still have money in my account from items sold last year.

A seller that rarely sells puts a high end phone on eBay, it is unsurprising that you cant withdraw those funds until the trade is complete, it may be annoying but its obviously there to protect the buyer from scammers.

Why not do as shocky says and post a tracking number for an insured delivery?

Well I cancelled the order, explained to the buyer what was going on. He has repaid for the phone using a credit card on his PayPal account, now I can withdraw the money... So the issue must have been his end. And no I do not need the money urgently, I just didn't want to get scammed. Thanks for the advice.

Had this happen to me a couple of times previously - PayPal state that they will hold the payment for up to 21 days for anti-fraud purposes (sometimes at random) but if you promptly post the item out, update the tracking on both the eBay website and also the transaction detail on PayPal straight away, the money will usually be available within 5 working days.

It is a pain in the backside I agree, especially when I offer free P&P for an expensive item and I have to shell out on expensive insured shipping in the process.

years ago when i sold a phone and there was a hold on the payment, paypal said they would release the funds once the buyer had left feedback to say he'd received it,
so posting a tracking number wouldnt have got me my money any sooner

"Payments as a new seller are held for 21 days UNLESS when you send an item the buyer leaves feedback OR if you send the item trackable and that item shows as delivered + 3 days then email paypal and they will release the funds sooner.Payment holds occur because: You have been selling on eBay for less than 90 days."

Seems pretty clear to me, once delivered contact Paypal and they should release the funds, might have to wait a few days first though.

Thank you for your help.
