If you send a gift of Money via PayPal what are the costs? It used to be free I think, now I seem to rember something like (2.9 percent + 30 cents), which you can pay the fees at your end. However, if you are using your Visa do you have to pay the Visa charges for taking cash? My son is abroad in the Yukon and to send money via Weston Union works out as about 30% ouch. Does anyone know of a cheaper way, bank transfers are £25 + the recipient is charged at there end, any help would be appriciated.

Is your son withdrawing funds from a UK based account? If so, as suggested just pay into the account.

If not, Paypal gift is free to send money, but only if you already have funds in your paypal account or the bank that is used to fund it. There are charges if you use a credit card, the amount you mentioned.

I wired £10 to a friend via Paypal as 'gift' and he only got £9.50, so I think there is a cut on all transactions. Lesson learnt, I now use online banking if it's a friend or relative.

I've never had fee's taken off my side of gifts before

One thing I do know however is german paypal won't let you send a gift, my mates always have to add standard fees :(

Paying as a gift means that you pay the fees, not him.

There is no clear rule, Ive paid from credit card a normal paypal and there was no fees for anyone

No idea why but usually it has to done via direct debit or similar to be free
