Wasn't quite sure where to post this.

Got a new PC running Windows 10. It's very quite, especially so when idling.

However, today i noticed then when i'm sitting next to my PC and browsing on my phone there is small amounts of activity on my PC when, for example, a page on my mobile is loading. Each time I load something you can hear the PC doing 'something' for the duration that the content is loading on the phone.

If i turn off wifi on my phone (and using the mobile data), it stops.

This is very weird right? Any ideas?

Yeh could be something like Chrome sync. Also check through the Settings > Privacy - try turn everything off and see if it helps, then you can turn back on one by one if you want to find out exactly what it was.

I don't use Chrome on my mobile. Checked the PC Chrome settings anyway.

It does it when loading any content on the phone (on wifi) e.g bbc news app, Antenna, GiantBomb etc. Sounds like a very quiet mechanical HDD sound for a very short bursts. Only have an SSD in there though.

Do you have a speaker for your computer? tried turning it off? could be interference.

Check the resource monitor to see if it's actually doing anything.

Oh, in that case, it's probably your speakers or something picking up the signal slightly. Try unplug them completely.

I don't have any speakers, only a USB headset plugged in. Tried unplugging those.

Imagine the sound quiet mechanical drive would make each time you loaded a small file to your PC. That's the sound it makes. Split second or a few seconds if it's something larger.

Does Windows 10 track all activity on a home network??

There is activity on the resource monitor but it's hard to separate normal background stuff from when i'm testing stuff on the mobile. The updates aren't instant enough either.

Yup, I know the exact sound, but you said you have an SSD, so I'd lean towards interference somewhere.

So regardless of whether it's tracking or not, it won't be making that noise due to activity, surely?

Could it be the motherboard speaker?

OK. Just moved the phone to another room and started the speedtest again. Ran back to computer and same sound.

The PC is hardwired. It's quite close to the VM router though so gonna move that away next.

Does the noise go away when the PC is disconnected from the home network*?

* totally not just diagnosing whether you're bonkers or not, honest :D
