i'm wanting to store my pc in another room so that my study is nice and silent. all i'd need to do this is get at least 6 metres length extender cables for my mouse and keyboard (both have 1 usb cable), 1 hdmi (screen 1), and 2 dvi cables (other 2 screens).

will there be any issue with the length of these cables? things like quality drops is my concern

I can only speak from experience of USB:

I had a similar requirement where the USB printer was in a separate room. The only way i managed to get it to work was by using a powered USB hub. I'm not sure if things have changed with USB 2 or 3, but anything more than 2m did not work without external power.

Also, when i looked into HDMI i read some reports that it mostly depends on your equipment. If cables, monitor and PC all confirm to the relevant standards 6m should be ok.

Get wireless mouse and keyboard (just checked range on mine and my mouse still worked fine from around 7 meters and 2 walls away - logitech G700) and the monitor output can be run through ethernet switch and cable which will have no issue going over such distance.

You can get active USB cables to go that length. HDMI will be fine as long as it has a compliance certificate, but I'm not so sure about DVI. Wiki gives a max length recommendation of 4.5 metres for 1080p. You can get DVI extenders.

thanks for the replies. i don't want to get a wireless mouse and keyboard, but perhaps a usb hub will do the trick. i thought usb hubs just powered usb devices, but i assume they send the info fine so keyboard, mouse, phone etc can still communicate with the pc?

DVI is fine, used a 10m DVI dual and 1440P was not a problem.

I also use a 10m active USB with 7 port powered hub at the other end.

Lounge to bedroom setup.

for what its worth, one of my builds that I use upstairs, has the base unit stuffed in the corner, and the keyboard and mouse have their own 5metre extention cables ( USB ), I am also using a powered USB 3 HUB and that cable is a 5 Metre USB 3 extention.
The Monitor is DVI and again thats on a 10Metre DVI Cable ( I dont have a 5M one )

Now, when I first did it, the display was looking a bit fizzy.

I admit that he DVI cable was a cheap and nasty job, so, I then bought a better quality DVI cable and that solved it.

I've got everything today but having an issue with the USB port.

The 10m 2.0 cable works fine with a single device plugged into it, so my mouse, keyboard etc work.

If I put the USB hub into the pc directly it works fine with the devices in it, though the power cable seems a bit wobbly and sometimes looses connection if not put all the way perfectly in, though once in the right spot it's consistent with power.

The issue I have is when the hub is plugged into the 10m cable. Any ideas if this could be down the active USB cable being only 2.0, or just it being an active cable all together, or perhaps the USB hub is faulty? Though it works fine without the cable, surely it should make no difference if it's got an extension cable on it.

This is the hub I have.

Anker® 60W 7-Port USB 3.0 Data Hub with 3 PowerIQ Charging Ports

I would try the hub closer to the PC with a shorter cable if you can. At least then you can determine if the issue i hub vs cable.

i'm having issues. my mouse is hit and miss and sometimes when i start the pc it doesn't connect. it's connected only to the 10m active usb cable 2.0 mentioned above.

it needs to be put into only a couple of the 6/7 usb slots the desktop has as most some reason don't work, though i suscpect the usb hub had something to do with this, perhaps it can over power and break a port?

the most annoying is that the connection seems to be slow. it's like the pc is lagging and my mouse will jump half across the monitor. any ideas what could be the issue here?

what do you mean noise?

right now it's perfect. no signs of issues at all. i played some h1z1 and at first no issues but then that started to appear with the mouse jumping all over and then even after i'd left the game for some hours the mouse never was fine again until now it's been put to sleep and woke back up.

edit: and now it's gone bad again. the cpu some reason spiked to 100% when just watching iplayer and youtube. it's back to 10% now but the mouse is rubbish

Noise as in sound coming from the pc.

I'd sooner tackle that before moving the pc.

If it's hard drive noise, consider a NAS drive. Then use ssd and laptop drives if you need local storage.

Order another powered hub from the rain forest hire shop ;) If you have prime it might be here tomorrow, if it works then, either keep it or send it back for free.

As I have said I use a 10m active USB from bedroom to lounge with a Belkin 7 port powered jobby on the other end, no problems.

Could be your hub as you say it it has inconsistent power port problems.

usb is flakey over around 4 metres.

What is generating most of the noise?

Active USB extends this.

does active usb take power from the motherboard? i wonder if perhaps that's causing these issues. WOULD THERe be any way to check and find out what power the pc is using and sending to which port etc?

i'm not using this hub at all and these problems are happening
