Im looking to install symantecs PC Anywhere on a server machine at home, and install various software on there like a bit torrent client, smart ftp etc...

I then want to connect to my server machine and gain control of it from a remote machine.

I have logged onto my router at home and set-up port forwarding to forward the PC Anywhere ports to the server machines I.P address (192.168.1.3)

When setting up PC anywhere what exactly do i have to do? do i have to create a host account on the server machine? then seeing as i already have pc anywhere configured on my work machine, do i just open up and connect to the I.P address at home? (The one issued by the isp)..then enter the host account name and password

Just setup the host account and make sure it runs at startup (i also ran mine as a service), in case you need to reboot.

To be honest though, after using PCAnywhere for about 5 years, i switched to windows remote desktop and the speed difference is simply amazing, im not sure why you would want to use PCAnywhere unless theres some kind of features your using on it, especially as RDP is free (but windows only of course).

Ok so if you wanted to use Remote desktop connection, would i need to forward any ports?

I.E forward ports blah blah blah to 192.168.1.5 (Server IP)

then open up remote desktop and put in the IP that my ISP has provided me with, connecting to my router, then forwarding all packets to the server.

Exactly that. Only one port is needed - TCP port 3389.

for pc anywhere i need to forward ports 5631 tcp or udp 5632, does this mean i select to forward the following:

TCP, UDP:

Port start: 5631 Port End: 5632
Port Map: 5631

?

...just a quick random reply while I go look at my config,
don't take this as gospel.

""PCAnywhere listens on ports 22 (TCP and UDP), 5631 (TCP) "pcanywheredata", and 5632 (TCP and UDP) "pcanywherestat), and 65301 (TCP).""

edit: proper help file here...

--------------

edit number 2:
my config appears to use
5631 (TCP)
5632 (UDP)

...although the above clip states 5632 (TCP and UDP) ?

hth

So basically just add them as seperate rules in the port forwarding config, then forward them to the relevant IP?

Gotcha
