hi all,

playing l4d2 last night, all of a sudden the pc switched off completely. pressing the power button caused the fan controller and an LED (attached via molex) to come on, as well as a few lights on the mobo.

does this sound more like psu or mobo dying?

spec in sig

cheers

would be unusuall for it to just die ... did you have a surge ?

check the votages in the psu if there not right rma the psu :)

when you try to boot now can you hear other devices powering? you mention the mobo lights come on so power is at least getting to the mobo, how about HDD's GFX cards? can you hear the CPU posting?

Id guess the MoBo, however there is a small chance its the PSU..

also possible the video card died if its an addin card...

another long shot unplug everything (cd, hd, floppy)

personally id blame MOBo (most likley), Video card (not so likley), PSU (unlikley but possibly)

swap the ram about and try one stick if possible as its only gonna take 30seconds..

absolutely nothing happens apart from the LEDs to show ddr phase, the light on the on switch on the mobo, and the LEDs for nb and cpu temp. no drives, fans etc spin up. i'm going to plug the speaker in and see if that gives anything...

i've got another psu to stick in there (pending it's up to the job, i have a lot of bits in there!: 2 pumps, 4 hds, 2 ssds etc)

there is no post at all btw

EDIT: everything is on a surge protector too btw :)

I'd be tempted to pull the ram and try a stick at a time. if that doesnt work as already suggested strip it bare and put only enough in to boot and see if anything changes.
I've had this with badly seated CPU's GFX cards, bad memory and in once case a screwed IDE DVD rewriter

i don't think it'll be anything like that, as it's been running in this config since about febuary...

i can test with 1 dimm etc, but watercooling kinda screws you over when it comes to taking out gfx :D

bad timing really, can't do much with it until at least tomorrow afternoon (exam in the morning)

appreciated that its been running stable since Feb but if you cant get it working I'd still be tempted to strip it (and all the work that involves) my rig needed a complete stripdown and rebuild last night as it stopped booted due to the GFX card being lose, its been stable and untouched for months. Good luck with exam

sound advice really; i'll test with a new psu (ordered a toughpower 1.2k just to be on the safe side) so hopefully once that turns up tomorrow i'll get a result.

my main concern if it is the psu that has died, what else might've been taken with it...

on that note, anyone have an idea as to warranty of the psu covering other system internals?

managed to get memory, gfx card and mobo replaced on RMA after the last time a PSU blew (and this time I hadnt modded it), took a few mails and ended up swapping comments from various companies but in the end they all ponied up for new kit for me! :D

hiper 580W which also got replaced.. technically the mobo didnt as I'd removed the OEM heatsink mount and it came back with 'warranty void' but they would have replaced if I hadnt been stupid and put the OEM mount back

just to say a big thanks guys, i've stuck a new psu in (TT toughpower 1200w) and everything is fine and dandy :)

now just to rma the corsair and sell the replacement...
