Is there a way to set a pc so it wakes up at a certain time, turns itself on and sets off an alarm or an mp3 like a stereo does???

Set your bios to turn on at a certain time, set windows scheduler to play an mp3 either on startup or say 5 mins after your bios startup time, or just drop the mp3 into your startup folder.
I personally recommend reveille very loud so you have to get out of bed to turn it down on the double Marine ;)

if my pc is on all night...as it often is, then i just have a plug-in for winamp...but might try the BIOS thing

then again i dont think my flatmates would be too fond of slayer or whatever going off in the morning

I use Task Scheduler to run a playlist currently filled up with AeroSmith (and it works ;)) and then switch to Radio 1 at 7.30. In the options it allows you to set it to wake up the computer, from standby or hibernation (doesn't seem to work on mine, possibly because it's a laptop).
