My friend think their pc has been hacked by some nonce from his old clan on WoW :rolleyes:,

I've told him that if this is the case he will need some upto date virus scan, adware removal software and a firewall.

The problem is he doesnt want to pay for anything :rolleyes: I know.

I think i have some good adware removal software (hijackthis) but im lost for free online virus scan and firewall as I pay for mine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can get a free trial of NOD32, it is fully working and receives updates but it is limited to something like 30 days I believe. You could also get AVG anti virus or Avast, both of which are full software and totally free.

If he wants an online virus scan then Trend Micros Housecall is probably the one I would recommend.

Free firewalls... no idea. Id have said Sygate a while ago but I dont know what it is like now. There is also ZoneAlarm of course.

Cheers for the help guys,

Sygate unforuntally no longer runs so i will check the rest,

Hi there,

It is very important and you should have an antivirus software, firewall and spyware cleaner type software. You should also make sure you update and run them reguarly

Best Package of Software if you have money to spend:

* NOD32 - (Click Here For Costs)
* ZoneAlarm Firewall - (Free)
* SpywareBlaster - (Free)
* CCleaner - (Free)
* Spybot Search and Destroy - (Free)

Best Package of Software if you don't have money to spend:

* AVAST - (Free)
* ZoneAlarm Firewall - (Free)
* SpywareBlaster - (Free)
* CCleaner - (Free)
* Spybot Search and Destroy - (Free)

Alternate free firewall:

* Sygate Personal Firewall - (Free)

Note: Even though sygate has been sold to Norton, you can still get the Sygate Personal Firewall. The latest version is 5.6 as is available for download in the link above.

Hope this helps!

Does he have any ideas on what hacking tools may have been employed? Some hacking tools cannot be detected or removed... this is from info from a CEH course.

If that's the case he'd be best off just reformatting and reinstalling. And if he's had no instrusion detection installed, then those more extreme hacking tools can be readily installed on the target.

If this guy is any good all this is in vain - but i doubt he's been hacked - serious damage would have been done

I would go with the reformat advice if he has been hacked - best to be safe than sorry.

My advice (pretty similar to everyone elses):
1) Download his selected anti-spyware/virus and firewall
2) Make an image of the current hard drive AND burn all documents AND chosen anti spyware/virus and firewall to an external source (eg. pen drive)
3) Format the hard drive (Full format, not quick)
4) Reinstall O/S
5) Install all your security packages
6) Connect to internet and download all updates and do a quick scan with all of them (on the safe side)
7) Let him install the rest of his things :)
