Hi all,

After building a pc for my missus my pc has now decided to give up the ghost!

What bits would you recommend for me with a budget of £400 or less.

Currently i have a Hard Disk and a Radeon 6850 HD GFX card so id need

Motherboard
Processor
Memory
Case
PSU
CD Drive
Windows 8

Ideally id like to be able to upgrade the GFX Card in the near future but i think that should be ok for now.

Any help would be appreciated

What will the pc be used for?

as you need everthing on £400 budget i would there will be problems.
can you no reuse your windows from last pc it would save you £60-£80

Hopefully to use for gaming. The o's on the old machine is vista. Do you think that would be ok?

The pc is just not booting up. It hangs. It's an old Dell pc so the case appears to be custom for them

These specs are not great,

MSI Z87 board, when Z97 is newer.

Asrock board when other manufacturers have longer UK based warranties.

FX8320 on a board with a low VRM count, its only really good fore a FX6300. Also it only supports RAM upto 2000Mhz in speed so you can save £5 with a 1600MHz kit as FX chips dont need fast RAM.

Bitfenix Merc Beta and Antec One are old designs.

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8320 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £113.99
1 x Gigabyte 970A-UD3P AMD 970 (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £67.99
1 x Crucial MX100 128GB SATA 2.5” 7mm SSD + 9.5mm Adapter (CT128MX100SSD1) £56.99
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £49.99
1 x TeamGroup Elite Black 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (TED38GM1600HC11DC01) £49.99
1 x Antec GX500 Midi-Tower - Black £43.99
1 x Alpenföhn Brocken ECO CPU-Kühler - 120 mm £24.95
Total : £421.99 (includes shipping : £11.75).

It is over £400 but tahts because you really do need a aftermarket cooler, the case will take them upto 158mmm in height.

The SSD is SATAIII rather than SATAII

Thanks for that :) silly question how do you tell what memory is best for a motherboard? I see so many different speeds etc. It's confusing!

You don't really I suppose.

You stick to a well known brand. FX chips don't benefit from fast RAM, only AMD APU's do and Haswell CPU's etc.

It will likely be included/pre-applied with the cooler

OcUK customer service could confirm for definite, but my guess is it will be included

thanks :)

1 last question i promise!! Will the Radeon 6850 HD be a bottleneck in this system or will it keep me going for a while?

Yeah it will be the next item that needs replacing and wont last too long.

Even a £100 GTX750ti beats it easily.
