My dad's PC is not booting up. Shortly after the windows logo appears while booting up, the monitor looses its signal and I am left with a black screen. I have tried re-installing windows, but the same thing is happening. Any ideas? Could the graphics card be finished? It is a 7950GX2, so quite old now.

Ordered a new graphics card, the Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4350. Wonder how it will comp[are to the 7950GX2! Hopefully this will fix the problem. If not, I am stumped!

To me, that sounds like someone has set the screen resolution within Windows to something that the monitor can't support. Can you boot into safe mode?

Yep, safe mode works fine. But when loading normally, as soon as the windows logo disappears, the monitor loses signal? The fresh install of windows hasn't helped though. Actually, I can't even complete the installation.

Does the computer die, drive lights, noise, fans etc?

Could be a heat issue. Power supply?

Could it be the monitor?

need more info, hardware etc.

andy.

Bad or missing drivers.

In safe mode amend start up items in msconfig.

AMD x2 4400+
Asus a8n-sli
7950GX2

Can't remember what else is in there tbh. Power supply is pretty new (it died a couple of years ago). The hard drive died recently too - I guess age is catching up it

Have you tried Safe Mode then change the res to 800x600 (or what ever settings are there) then reboot the PC?

Will try this when I put the new graphics card in.

Cheers guys, you have given me some other things to try.
