dumb [****] thing to do but i was changing the CPU fan from the power supply input to the motherboard input when the computer was running, ive done it for years and never had a problem....... this time i saw a small spark and the screen went dead. i cant even turn the pc on.

has just the PSU died? or motherboard aswell? any other parts affected?

ive just spend £1200 on this pc only had it 24 hours. DS4 + E6600. omfg.

OOPS!

Pull the mains cable from the psu for 30 seconds or so and it may work ok after, just a small short like that will often simply trip the psu, removing the mains will allow it to reset.

Fingers crossed for you.

That usually works.

When you unplug the PSU, you can usually hear a faint, short "bweep" as what I assume is a capacitor quickly discharges. This is when you can plug the power cable back in - usually if you unplug the PSU for about a minute, that will do it.

BTW, I'd remove that disguised swearword from your post.

may i be the first to say that that was a dumb thing to do. if you have a decent psu it should have not harmed other components.

i agree, very dumb. im very lucky its working now.

Back in the days of Pentium 2 when I didn't know what I was doing I plugged in a molex to the HDD while the computer was still on - unsurprisingly there was a big spark and PC went dead. Unplugged the main several times and it finally booted up. That was a scary experience.

By the way why did you plug the CPU fan to PSU and not the mobo in the first place??

Glad it worked, been there done that changed underwear :o plugging in fans or hdds  and next thing ya know - oh [Swearing!] - pull plug and hope, im sure i'll kill a psu one day.
