This is an old battered work PC (never been cleaned in its life, super basic motherboard, no fans, crap PSU etc) that a colleague uses. It locked up loading up some software on its HDD, so I restarted the PC. Now when I start the PC it reached windows splash screen and then blue screens for an instant and restarts.

Windows and applications like outlook etc are installed locally on the PC and the PC does the computing grunt- it isn't a virtual Citrix thing. All Documents and files are saved on the NAS.

It will happily sit in the bios for 5 mins so I guess it isnt temperature related (although it was reporting idle cpu temp of 70c!!!). Post screen doesnt flag errors like CPU fan.

Any ideas?

It is a Sandybridge i3, stock cooler
2x 2GB DDR3
Naff HDD of some sort

if its hitting them temps it might be worth giving the PC a clean out.

try and load in to safe mode and see if that allows you in to windows

If you mange to get into safe mode then a system restore is probably in order to clear the duff software.

And 70c idle is way too high.

Give it a good clean out and see whether that drops the idle temps. It could be resetting because it's getting too hot or it could be that when it hung up, it corrupted windows.

If all your data's on the NAS, then you could just wipe it and start again. But try system restore first.
