PC Boot Sometimes Hangs at the BIOS - Help

Hi,

I'm trying to help a friend with a problem he has with his PC.

Sometimes when booting it gets stuck very early in the BIOS startup and won't proceed any further.

Soft restarts often result in the same although they will sometimes fix the problem.

However, a hard reset (toggling the switch on the PSU) will more than often fix it.

Once running, the PC is stable and will stay up as long as you want without missing a beat.

This only happens once it has been shutdown and then restarted sometime later (e.g. shutdown at night and restarted in the morning).

Don't think it is heat related because it only happens when the PC has been shutdown for a while.

The power supply is a Corsair HX850 and more than enough for the system. Wiring all looks good.

The components are relatively new (about 12 months) and the mobo uses solid capacitors.

My thoughts are the PSU - but I'm loathed to recommend replacing that if it is not the problem.

The PSU will be under manufacturers warranty but that would require sending it off and being without his computer for weeks - and might find that this isn't even the problem.

Any ideas?

Any further checks that we could do?

Cheers,

Nigel

A build id did for someone had a horrible delay/hang issue after a cold off and on. Turned out to be the CMOS battery needed replacing.

May be worth a shot

It seems to be related to his graphics card.

He has an XFX 9790 with 3 monitors attached. One is connected by a straight HDMI lead whilst the other two are via HBMI>Display Port adapters.

If I disconnect the two Display Port connections (so just a single screen) it boots every time.

But if I leave one or both of the Display Port monitors connected it doesn't.

The boot failure is becoming very regular now and is not reaching any POST errors.

This did work fine before.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Nigel

XFX 7970 Boot Problem

Trying to help a friend with a boot problem.

He has an XFX 7970 with three monitors connected.

The main monitor is connected with an HDMI lead whilst the other two are connected using Display Port adapters.

With just the main monitor connected it will boot every time without fail.

With one or two of the other monitors connected it will fail to boot most times.

When it fails to boot it doesn't reach the POST so no errors are displayed.

It used to work fine with all three monitors connected.

Anyone seen this before?

Anyone any ideas or suggestions what could be the cause or what we could try to remedy the problem?

Cheers,

Nigel
