PC boots randomly and restarts on shutdown

Recently I have been having a few problems with my system rebooting on shutdown, and the only way to turn it off was to flick the switch on the back of the psu. This has then got worse, when I come to boot the pc up next time, it doesnt respond to the power button at all, but then randomly a few minutes later it boots up :O.

Ive been using this computer for nearly 2 years now with no problems, and no hardware changes so have no idea whats wrong. Have tried using a different power switch to see if that was broken, and its made no difference.

If its any help I'm using an Abit AN8 motherboard, and the little POST code display on it shows "0.0" when the pc is first turned on, and changes to "F. " when you press the switch (Fail I guess?).

Thanks for any ideas in advance ;)

AFAIK "F" or "FF" means it's working ok? I can't remember, but it does sound familiar to me. :) Tbh it sounds like perhaps the PSU may be at fault here. Anyway you can try another PSU in the machine?

I dont think it will be the PSU, as when it does boot up it runs fine, can browse the web/game/play music no problem. And nope, I dont have another PSU to test it with :(

The only reason I suggest that mate, was because I have had an issue where I couldn't get the PC to start-up. Sometimes it would, other times I would press the Power button and get nothing. Usually I had to flick the PSU on and off. Eventually it wouldn't come on full stop. So I took a gamble thinking it was the PSU and not the mobo, fitted my new 700w OCZ PSU and it fired up first time. :)

I had a quick look inside the old one and it looked like something had leaked/exploded and there were some burnt out capacitors.

Power Supply problem almost definetely. The capacitor's electrolyte decays, after 2 years you are looking at significant drop in rated wattage at least (20%) which can often explain startup problems.

Hmm ok, have tried a different PSU, but same problem still :(

Have left a few things unconnected so there less load on it but no effect, any other idea's?
