Hi All

Iv got hold of a CPU a i5-4690k Dont ask me why other than it was a good price at £125. Right I have a few questions about the chip the build and other parts.
First to the motherboard. I read about the chip and found its a super chip for over clocking and will O/C quite a way. That said Id like a M/B that will let me O/C it in case I want to. At first build I will run it at its 3.5Ghz original standard speed.. As can also build it with standard cooling that way and add any extra or liquid cooling at a later date as and when I want to O/C it?

Also where the M/B is concerned I would also like to put the build into a small Cube type case like the
"" Corsair Carbide Series CC-9011070-WW Air 240 High Airflow MicroATX and Mini-ITX Cube PC Case-Blac ""
So would need a m-atx M/B would it not. is that right?
So this in mind can you suggest a M/B that is the right size and can O/C easily please. Also caan it be mid priced pleasssssseeeee lol.

I do also have a GTX 960 2Gb GPU now I know they dont take or need a lot of power unlike some power hungry GPS's that are out there so a 500 watt unit should do But having a chip and M/B that is overclockable and I know that the GTX 960 may be the bottle neck and may need replacing sooner than later so with that also in mind as well as the possibility of O/Cing the chip & M/B what size of PSU (wattage) should I be looking to add to the system Suggestions please...

One last and important question and that is that this is a 1150 M/B which is DDR3 memory. SO How much Is this a disadvantage over the DDR4? memory that is in the newer M/B's.
Would I have been better off getting a ready built Core i5 6500 Skylake system which sounds quite a cheap option now looking at it?? Just a thought.

Many thanks for all your help

regards Osh

You will need a M-atx Z97 board but the biggest problem you are going to have is finding a decent board in stock anywhere. I have just checked 3 of the biggest UK retailers including OCUK and none of them have a single Z97 M-atx board. Next best chance is second hand on Ebay but prepare to pay over the odds. I think it's a bad move and that you would be better off going for Skylake/Kabylake or waiting for Zen.

pc build

Hi

see what you mean I can only find one which is a ATX one at a good price.
Iv just had a quick look and come up with these
Gigabyte GA-Z97P-D3 Socket 1150 HDMI 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard
Which is from the UK and only £64

I just wondered what you thought about this board....I know it means a larger case but I think what can be done with this processor it might be worth compromising on the case. What do you think?

regards Andy

I linked the z97m as you need a Matx board for your case I think. I would personally buy from Amazon rather than some German site for a few quid a difference. Are you sure the £5 delivery includes international shipping? Would also imagine Amazon would be easier to deal with regarding warranty.

Right
Whats a decent DDR3 memory for the said board now it looks as though 1600 the normal with prices sub £100 then "100 taking it to £126 Its now finding out if the Board will take the higher speed memory .

just seen these are they the right ones or not?

TeamGroup Vulcan RED 16GB 2x8GB DDR3 2133MHz
Not new but would be nice if they fitted was because they are quite cheap at the moment?

Or These at £87
Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB DDR3 2133 2 x 8GB 2133MHz PC 8 16 Silver

Best regards Osh

P.S.
The German site mentioned is quite a very large site which im not sure I can put the name up on here with O/C also being a retailer and our hosts? So in essence would think it not fair to them in fair play..

Heisenburg, you had better remove your link before a mod see's it as links to competitors are against the forum rules. So are competitors prices come to that.

OP, the differences between the Z97P-D3 and Z97-D3H can be seen here in this sided by side comparison. Amongst the differences are the D3H has a extra heatsink for the vrm's, better audio and more connectivity. Gigabyte M-atx boards usually have M after the chipset so Z97M, Z170M etc.

If you are considering a different case that takes a full size board then OCUK has the Gigabyte Z97P-D3 in stock:-

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £78.49
(includes shipping: £10.50)

After thinking about the possibility of overclocking at a later date and the bits that I might need to pull it off Iv decided to go to a midi case and with it the number of Z97 motherboards increase massively.. Can anyone suggest a board under a £100 that will be a good fit please? If possible I would like on board WiFi and pay extra for it if not its not the end of the world. But the Z97 list of boards do look a little like a minefield LOL

The thing is that you aren't going to be able to pick and choose. It's more a case of choosing from what is left. None of the main UK computer components retailers have any Z97 M-atx boards, not many Z97 boards at all come to that. I found one place that had stock and they had the following:-

ASUS Z97 M-Plus
GIGABYTE Z97M-D3H

Neither of them have wi-fi built in but all you need is one of these cards. With that in mind I would probably go for the Gigabyte. At £90 it's enough to pay and the Asus offers little more for a extra £35. Duie to forum rules I can't tell you where they are for sale but googling turns them up.

***Edit***Hang on, are we talking about a full size board now? If so there is the board I linked to above which would need a add-on wi-fi card. It's a decent budget board. Other than that I have found the following in stock elsewhere:-

Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 3
Asus Z97-A
Asus Z97-P
Asrock Fatal1ty Z97 Killer/3.1
Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI
ASUS Z97-E

Out of those my 1st choice would be the Asrock followed by the Asus Z97-A then the Gigabyte Z97X-SLI. None of them have built in wi'fi so you will need one of the add-on cards. There are others but they are overpriced and by going for a more expensive board you would be better off selling the 4690k and changing your plans and switching to Kabylake.
