hey everyone,

after reading the forums for about a month, i've decided on a build with these parts:

Case: Antec 1200

Motherboard: Asus Striker II Extreme nForce 790i Ultra SLi (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard

RAM: Corsair 4GB DDR3 DHX 1600C7DHX Twin3X

Graphics Card: BFG GeForce GTX 260 OC

HDD: Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB 10000RPM

CD Drives: Samsung SH-S223F/BEBE 22x DVD±RW

Sound: Razer IAS Barracuda AC-1 Gaming 7.1 Sound Card + Barracuda HP-1 Gaming Headset

PSU: Enermax Infiniti 720W

Keyboard: Logitech G15

Moniter: Got One Spare, thanks qwerty for reminding me :)

OS (thanks BeerBaron for reminding me lol): Vista (definatley) but should i go 32 bit or 64 bit? i know on xp i'd need 64, but will 32 bit vista see all 4 gigs of ram? if no, then home premium x64

it's going to be a complete build, so i don't have any parts already.

as im sure you've noticed, i don't have a cpu, mouse, or cpu cooler.

I'm going to be using the computer for occasional work, lot of browsing, and quite a bit of gaming.

CPU (I need your help on this one):

Click or Clicky

Also, i'm not going to be upgrading for around 3-4 years or so (maybe a part here or there, like a new gpu in 3 years, but other than that nothing.)

The mouse, again i'm stuck

Logitech G5 or Razer Lanchesis.

tbh i only started looking at the razers recently, but this 4000 DPI mouse just caught my eye. From what i've seen it's the best razer mouse. All the others, i'd rather get the G5, but a bit stuck here

Lastly, CPU Cooler:

For me, after all the posts i've seen, seems to be the TRUE, but it's out of stock with no ETA :o

haha, so anyway, i need a CPU cooler, that will keep my CPU as cool as is possible, while at the same time being fairly quiet.

EDIT: I just noticed that you need to actually buy a fan for the TRUE, so in that case, i'll wait for it to come back in stock.

Can a kind sould please recommend a fan?

Thanks for reading if you've got this far hehe.

The last issue is, the total price comes to almost £2000 pounds. that is kinda out of budget.

including V.A.T it has to be £1500-1700 max.

thanks for reading and any replies are appreciated,
Minato

If you can put the extra to it the Q9550 is well worth the money from what I've read. I'd swap my Q6600 for one in an instant if I could :p

thanks for the reply,

Quad Core seems the way to go i think, since i'm basically trying to future proof where i can, the only thing holding me back is people can get up to 4 GHZ with the E8600, and I've never really overclocked (or even built anything) before this, so it's either go for the easy option and maybe faster..or spend a bit more for a future proof CPU

If your not going to be upgrading for a while there is some new intel cpu's coming out next month so i would hang on for them.

If you dont want to wait i would swap the motherboard for a Asus p5q Deluxe and swap the ram for some ddr2 stuff, My reasons behind this is that the intel p45 is superior and cheaper than the nforce one, and ddr3 is still not worthwhile.

I am not a big fan of raptors and would change it for a samsung f1 1tb, cheaper, more space, almost as fast.

That monitor is not great for gaming, you would be best of getting a decent 22-24".

I would choose the dual core cpu as you will not benefit from having 4 cores for what you will be using it for.

For gaming you wont notice a difference between 3.3ghz or 4.0ghz, except in ONE game (flight simulator x)

If there is a difference its like 2fps which isnt noticeable to the naked eye.

thanks for the reply cheif, are the new intel cpu's the i7 nehalem, or something else?

also, in a month's time, might the price of ddr3 be a bit lower?

moniter, fair enough, i just though it was a great deal lol, i mean 28" for the same price as a 22".

EDIT: I do actually have a dell 22" screen, so to save some cash, i think i'll use that.

thanks for reminding me lol

aha, thanks for the info.

one question, do you reckon while browsing, and using the computer while not gaming will be effected? like speed etc.

Yerr its going to be i7

With the pound becoming weaker against the dollar prices are going to go up im afraid, Gibbo has confirmed it.

oh dear oh dear,

at least i7's almost here :) something good to look forward to hehe.

what do you reckon the start price of nehalem will be?

For just browsing etc it will still be fast and responsive. I think one of the main reasons people clock to 4-4.5GHz is for folding@home etc. If you dont do things like that or you dont benchmark, then you don't need it.

aaah, thanks a ton MooMoo, that makes life much easier

Rumors are its going to be very reasonable, i think i remember reading that the cheapest its going to be about $260 when bought in quantities of >1000.

So over here im guessing about £160

wow, that is very good to hear.

and here i was thinking it would be like the QX series :p

Theres also the e-peen thing of "My CPU does SuperPI faster than yours :p" but thats just silly lol.

haha, i can imagine.

well, at least it's not :
i played crysis for 72 hours straight at 1900x1200 all settings max!!!!

Oh yeah! i played it for 80 hours straight at 1900x1200 all settings max!!!!

Right, well that's the CPU sorted,

does anyone have an opinion on:

Logitech G5 vs. Razer Lanchises

lol, makes it sound like an epic battle.

wow, never considered that mouse, thought it does look very nice.

just 2 things,

i use the side buttons of a mouse a lot, especially in games. it makes it much easier say, to have crouch and prone as the side buttons, since it will always be faster than pressing a button on the keyboard.

also, does this DPI make much difference? i've never really gone higher than 800 DPI.

any ideas?

thanks.

Personally its the g5 for me, I just can't stand the shape of the razer. If you know someone with those mice ask them if you can try them out for a bit, I personally find the g5 more ergonomic but when I use my mates razer it feels un-natural and there are parts which feel out of place. Its really a personal choice in the end though.
