Ok so this morning I have put all my parts together for my pc...every thing fires up when i hit the power button, but when i hook my "temporary" crappy dell monitor up to my graphics card (4890) via a vga adaptor the screen simply doesnt start, just sits there on standby....So what happens now?

Do I just stuff my windows cd in and pray? Another point - my dvd drive wont open...i have checked for the slave thing and its on master, all plugged in ok. Do I have do something in the bios first before it all becomes operational?

i tried searching on youtube but it seems mostly about the build of pcs. nothing about what to do when you throw that big switch and go live,

anyhow thanks for your time,

is there a power cable in the dvd drive.? :p

boot into the bios and make sure the dvd is the first boot device, pop in the windows dvd and restart..

pretty self explanitory thereafter

Maybe the vga cable is dodgy (these things do happen), try a diferant one, or a spare monitor, if you don't have one see if a friend could help you out there. As for the Dvd drive, check that all the cables are plugged in properly.

doesnt sound like this build is very complete!
:p
Have you got the power lines going in to the graphics card and on to the motherboard to power the CPU?

I have put the 2 pci ex connections in the gaming card, but power on the cpu? Wot, wot, wot? Do I have to plug the cpu in? / i mean apart from putting it in its bed with the lever...

I am running the monitor from the graphics card, as the monitor connector on the mother board is a strange looking thing. It has 5 pins on the top most row and, but my cord has the same pins so its male and male. Whats up with that?

I built my 1st system a few weeks ago now, i had the same problem, my monitor just wouldn't come on, after making sure everything was in its proper place and properly connect. I realized that my ram was in the 2nd slot of the ports on my mobo, i switched them to port 1 and it all worked, might be worth giving that ago.

i am running my monitor through my gfx card, a 4890. also make sure you have connected both cables from the psu to the mobo. Not to sure if this will make a difference but i know some people often miss one of the connectors.

No, with the 4890 i you should be connecting 2 6pin (i think its 6pin) into it from the psu. What im on about is the psu needs to be plugged into the mobo. There should be 2 ports to plug into, a long port and a smaller one, i dont know how many pins they are or what there called im no expert myself :). Have you tried checking your ram yet?

i removed one stick of ram...but theres still no signal...maybe i need a new cable or an old school monitor?

hmm

can you hear the graphics card boot up? it might be faulty. also im not sure but some acrds need two power cables plugged in. make sure both are

I would firstly do the simple thing of unplugging everything and plugging it all back in. Have you tried taking out the graphics card and using onboard?
