PC-Chips M861G wrong CPU speed

Bought a bundle - PC-Chips M861G, Athlon 3700, 2x1GB.
The RAM failed in Memtest, so PC-Chips said "flash the BIOS to the latest".
Did that, and the Athlon 3700 (800 fsb -> 2400 MHz) turned into an Engineering Sample (200 fsb -> 800 MHz). It is marked ADA3700 AEP5AR, which is correct.

Help! What do I do now? PC-Chips supplied five BIOSs. I have tried the three most recent so far with no change.

Its probably bios settings need adjusting. I've had this before with motherboards that are set at the lowest FSB/multiplier speeds as default. I'm not familiar with this board so can't say anything specific.

As far as i'm aware... PC Chips = shockingly bad...

Every person i've spoken to said it performed bad. My brother had one on his socket A setup and it halfed his 3dmark score :p

The fsb should be 200mhz. What you are looking for is the setting for hypertransport which should be set to x4 or x5 which gives you the 800/1000 setting. A 3700+ should be 200 fsb x 12 multiplier, just ensure that the multiplier is set to 12 and not lower and that the fsb is at 200mhz.

Thanks for your response, Melchy. I thought that the multiplier was set within the CPU and couldn't be changed? There are no BIOS settings for multiplier or hypertransport (what is hypertransport? I understand fsb and multiplier).

Are there no settings at all for the CPU ? A64 multipliers are locked up the way (cant go higher than 12 in your case), but not down the way. So it is quite possible that your CPU is running on a lower multiplier thus the low speed. This is usually done by boards when the are put back to default settings, or after a failed overclock. It may just be that which ever bios you are using just doesnt recognise the CPU so has gone into a "safety" setting.

*edit*Ah its a socket 754 board, looking at the manual now to see if it tells me anything.

Right looking at the manual. Under the CPU P&P Setup page there are next to no settings in the bios for the cpu as you mention. The cpu should be listed as whatever version of cpu that you have. There appears to be no ability to change the multiplier as you mention. The only thing i can suggest to try is to enable the overclocking function and leave the fsb set to 200 or 201. Then save and exit and see what happens. It looks more and more like a problem with the bios recognising the CPU. Are you sure you have flashed with the most recent version. Bios version 050830S should support the 3700+.

I did have the 050830S BIOS. It is all over now, RMA time. The original reason for replacing the BIOS was because there were problems with the memory that came with it, and that was what PC-Chips suggested. I have flashed 050830S again and it is all wrapped up and in a box. Thanks for your help anyway.
