I never noticed the following problem before i installed vista a few weeks back - probably just coincience?

My PC clock seems to lose a couple of minutes every day or so, I thought that this could be the cmos battery, but am not thoroughly convined as the pc is plugged into the wall 24/7, abeit via an intelliplig - it was my view that a mains powered PC didn't rely on the cmos battery - am I correct?

I know i can increase teh rate that the PC checks the time throuh the internet, but would like to determine the root cause of the problem.

Maybe all your other clocks gain a few minutes? Okay, not helping :-)

You may aswell try to replace the CMOS batt, although it does sound odd when the PC is powered.

The batt powers the onboard time/date clock if there is no power being supplied by the psu.
All psu's (unless physically switched off) supply a 5V line to the mobo all the time. This powers the clock and various other facilities (wake on lan, usb power etc). thus prolonging the life of the batt as it isnt used.

My suggestion is that the intelliplug actually cuts power to your psu when you shut down your pc. As a result there is no 5V rail to power the clock etc, so the battery is used... a lot!

This has more than likely worn it out. just replace the thing. Either get a few, or get rid of the intelliplug as the issue wont go away if it cuts power whent the pc is 'off'.
