hey guys,

Ive just recently installed a new hard drive in my pc to replace an older slower drive and since then everytime i try to play a game like call of duty 2 or counter stike zero my PC crashes. It blue screens for a split second then restarts itself. I have checked all connections for the graphics card and such and they are all fine, Ive also checked the temperature and its not overheating and I'm currently running memtest. But has anyone got any other ideas as to what the problem is?

ok update.

we have swapped the ram sticks round. re-installed the drivers for the gfx card. cleaned the card. swapped the cables around inside so it is getting adequate power to it. now its bosd with win32k.sys or irql less or not equal to. before we refreshed the drivers it was a bsod witn nv4_dis.dll error. we searched the internet.some people are saying its Ram related and others are saying its heat. and others are unsure (like us).

any ideas guys and gals??

So the only thing youve changed is the hard drive?

Is it still the same interface, ie, SATA or IDE

If running overclocked try it at stock.

Mite be helpful to know the rest of your specs :)

yeah only change is the hard drive. it is an ide drive. so was the one we changed it from. will get more specs later on when the g/f has the chance to take a look

the pc specs are:
AMD Athlon XP3200 (Socket A) cpu
Asus A7V600-X (Socket A) mobo
Leadtek WinFast GeForce 6800LE 128MB gfx
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 80GB ST380215A ATA-100 2MB Cache HDD
2 x OCUk Value 512MB PC3200 184pin DDR Memory

Ive reformatted the pc and installed the gfx drivers from the disk but the exact same thing keeps happening but the BSOD keeps bringing up different error messages. One i recieved earlier today was something similar to:
USBPORT.sys

Im not sure if its the hard drive because the only problems we've had is when playing games

does any one have any ideas or anything i could try to troubleshoot the problem. At this rate i may as well buy a new system.

Have you tried running with just one stick of ram in at a time?

Do you still have the original hard drive? Maybe try reinstalling that with your OS instead and seeing if the problem persists.

There's an option in system properties to stop your pc automatically rebooting after a crash, that should give you more time to read the error messages. It should also be listed in event viewer.

I havent tried running with one stick of ram yet. The original hard drive is an older much slower drive so I've been trying to avoid putting it back in but I will give it a go thanks.

put old hard drive back in and it still crashed in the same way. Changed the drives back and removed one stick of ram everytime the game loaded the game then closed and went back to desktop. I changed the ram over and the system blue screened and reset again any ideas?

A branded (well known one) or a lesser known brand?. As i have had people bringing in PCs that blue screen, running memtest gave errors however trying a better PSU cured all problems and on running memtest, no errors were reported.

right ive changed the sticks over and the cs crashed a couple of times to desktop and then ran fine. ive just tried to play call of duty 2 and its crashed again a couple of times back to the desktop and the blue screened im going to put the second stick back in a rum memtest.

As far as i know the graphics card is fine. once memtest has completed i mite run on onboard graphics to see if that is the problem

Ive now got both sticks of ram back in the pc and have been running memtest for 4 hours 35 mins its complete 3 and a bit full tests and they have all passed so is there anything else i can try?

I havent used onboard gfx as the connector on the mobo is male and i dont have an adapter to change it to female

i think ive finally found the problem. Ive been running BurnInTest. There were no problems on the 1st test so i increased the stress on the ram and during the 2nd test it showed a video memory test error in the 2D Graphics Test. Ive just re ran the tests to include 3d graphics and the system just blue screened again. so it looks like its the gfx card to me any other opinions?
