Ok, so everytime i play a game my pc crashes within 5 - 10 mins of gameplay. I am forced to reset the computer to use it again the screen will freeze with random lines and colours and the sound will sound like a very loud vibrating noise (only way to describe it) This happens when i play games like TF2 and Oblivion and other games like that, but i can play minecraft for about 3hrs and then it will crash.

SPECS:
Intel Quad-Core Q6600 @ 2.4 (Stock) - Note: I cant OC because of my mobo
PNY 9600GT 512mb
300GB HDD
4gb DDR2 RAM
Corsair 500w PSU (bought this about a week ago to see if it would resolve the problem, but it didnt) - Upgraded from 240W PSU

Any help will be greatly appreciated THANK-YOU! :D

It might be a heat issue... What kind of load temps do you get? And when was the last time you cleaned your case / fans out? And are all your fans, espeicially the GFX card fan, still spinning up properly?

But apart from that it sounds to me like your graphics card is dying. Perhaps the vram has developed a fault. Try and borrow a card from someone to test with.

I dont know how to monitor my GPU temps :/
But my cpu temp rises to about 70C on full load and about 35- 40C Idle with stock cooler. I heard the max was 75C for a quad-core cpu on full load?

Thanks

Those temps are about right for a Q6600 on a stock cooler. And I doubt that what you are seeing is related to your CPU.

You can monitor GPU temps with something like ntune, or I think that GPU-Z does it too.

Ok, I just turned my PC and started playing minecraft and my CPU temps have risen to 61C is this too high? Ill get GPU-Z and look at my graphics cards temp. Also iv just noticed there seems to be a like grinding noise coming from the back of the pc so im guessing its the psu....any ideas why that might be making noises? last night when i turned my pc off i noticed it make that 'coil whine' noise please done tell me my psu is dying i only bought it last week! :(

Does the card need a clean? Dust will can cause problems with temps and performance if left to build up over a long period of time.

I cleaned it out last night as i saw some dust on the GPU fan, but still have this crashing problem :( are the temps for my GPU ok though 70C - 75C on 97% load? CPU is at 75C now just running minecraft :/

a CPU of that temp range wouldn't crash your PC like that, its the GFX card that's the issue, it either needs replacing of stripping down, cleaning and a new good quality TIM application pllying

It does sound a little high, how long have you had the card? It 'might' be worth considering a cheap, second hand cooler or maybe re-applying some thermal paste.

Iv had the card for about 2 years now...I know that it should be running oblivion at max settings iv seen videos on youtube where the 9600GT was running skyrim at medium! I was planning on upgrading my GPU soonish anyway :) so you think i should get a new cooler for my cpu or did you mean my gpu? id rather just buy a new gpu altogether iv recently won an auction for a hd 5850 (bidded on it thinking i wasnt going to win hehe) so i might just get that? im not 100% sure if my cpu will hold it back...anyone know if it will? :)

I was referring to a cheap cooler for your gpu, since there's little point in spending much on it. Your Q6600 at stock will hold back a 5850 though you would still see a reasonable improvement in frame rates in gpu dependent games, where as cpu dependent ones such as online games will highlight the deficit to a greater degree.

One of these could be an option...

...though applying paste would be cheaper.

I would say that the real problem in the long run is your mobo, as you say, it doesn't allow an overclock on your cpu. What you could do is either 1) save up for a new cpu and mobo (essentially a new rig) - probably your best option in the longer term, or 2) try and source an old mobo that will be better suited to your overclocking needs. The Q6600 is still a decent enough chip - provided it's overclocked to at least 3 - 3.2ghz, and will then pair up nicely with most if not all single gpu's with generally at worst an insignificant bottleneck.

Iv bought the HD5850 (3months old) £97...Bargin? ;) i think i might look for a new mobo and cpu cooler. any suggestions on a oc'able MICRO-ATX MOBO because an atx would be a very, very tight fit in my case someone mentioned a P45 mobo on here once but i dont really want to have to buy another copy of windows 7 :/

Window 7 is on your HDD. not your motherboard.

By all means look out for a p45. Probably not to expensive now. and would allow you to get the most out of your chip.

Gelid Tranquilo is a good value cooler.

My little AC freezer 7 does alright. snigger.

I know its on my hDD but last time i installed a mobo with win7 on my hDD it wouldnt boot and i dont really want to go there again as i had to send the board back and refund my money. thanks for the cooler suggestion :) ill have a look
