PC Crashes: Hardware or software?

My PC decided to turn itself off yesterday and I could only restart it by turning the power off then on again at the mains.
I checked online and it advised to make sure all cables are connected correctly. I then updated the GFX drivers and thats when the fun started

I then got the following error 'system thread exception not handled' and after trying everything that was recommended on the internet with no success I had to reformat the primary hard drive.

Anyway since the format, the PC seems stable again. I ran a game for a small period of time and have experienced no crashes. . .so far.

I was just wondering if the initial crash was a hardware or software issue. I ask this as I think the onboard sound card software was playing up (sound coming through wrong speakers etc) and wonder if this could have been to blame?

So have been running for about a week with no incident after initial crashes/format and now have had the same thing happen again. PC just shuts down immediately and can't be started up again unless I turn power off and back on again at the mains.

Surely someone else must have had a similar problem?

I did find one thing at that was to swap power control from AMD software to windows control. I have done that and no further crashes. . .just annoying that so far they have happened on a Saturday my day off.

I did fresh install last time.
It happened just the once yesterday and after I moved power options to be controlled by Windows it hasn't happened again . . so far.
Will have to see how it goes.

Check the event log to see if you have any critical event that may give you a clue.

After which, I would then check your PSU is providing stable voltage or enough. There's a guide on how to do this in the sticky. Swap the PSU out if you can (always handy to keep a spare ;) ) and take the system back to it basics..including running the system at stock settings.
