When playing games such as, crysis 2, bad company 2, shift ect. i can play the game for around 20 minutes and then the screen goes black and the system goes completely unresponsive, i have to hold the power button to shut it down.

i have un-installed all the graphics drivers/software then re-installed them again. still not working

my system
core i5 @ stock
gigabyte p55a-ud4 motherboard
4gb ddr3 1333 mhz ram
xfx ati radeon 4850 xxx edition
700w coolermaster psu
320gb hdd

can anyone help with my problem, because i can't play any games now because they just crash, and i was really looking forward to portal 2 :(.

it sounds like an overheating issue where the system shuts down to stop permenant damage - is the case well ventilated, good airflow etc?

just my first inclination...

The case has no obstructions around it and all the fans are set to max (its an Antec 902)

Temps:

CPU Idle: 27c-32c
CPU when playing: 40c-45c

GPU Idle: 49c-53c
GPU When playing: 64c-70c

Those are some pretty low temps...

OK, full specs (games, software and oc tools etc.) and what OS are you using?

If it isn't heat, then a likely villain might be the PSU (I hope not; I've just bought a CM 700w Modular for my brother's build)

EDIT: Or it could be something as simple as a loose connection. Perhaps checking to see if the power cable to the GPU is properly connected (i.e. clicked firmly in place).

just done a test again on the gpu temps and this time it rose to 75c max.

OS: Windows 7 64-bit Service Pack 1 -fully updated
Games it crashes with: crysis 2, bad company 2, shift, fallout new vegas. about the only game it doesnt is minecraft lol.

i use microsoft security essentials. nothing else really runs in the background.

o man i hope its not the PSU, is there a way i can test a PSU?

How bizarre.

Furmark stresses the PSU and GPU temps so from the sounds of it, they should be fine (unless it's faulty VRAM with the GPU).

How about stressing your CPU and monitoring the temps?

But if all the hardware is ok (might want to check the RAM as well) then this must be a software/driver issue.

Did you do a full uninstall of old drivers using driversweeper, etc? Need to make sure there's no conflict in that regard.

ok i ran memtest and after 3 passes there were no errors, so the RAM is fine.

Un-installed all of the ATI Drivers, then booted to safe mode and ran Driversweeper and then downloaded the latest again off of the ATI Website and installed fine.

Ran intelBurnTest on high for 10 passes and it was completely stable temps were perfect.

strangely i took the plunge and installed portal 2 today and i managed to play that without any issues. I then thought that maybe the other games were installed incorrectly, so i un-installed crysis 2 and then reinstalled. but still after about 20 minutes i get a black screen and have to shut it off.

i read on some other sites that something as little as a headset driver which the game would want to use, could be corrupt and make the PC crash, is this true?

other than that i am out of ideas to be honest.

Hi,

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but I wondered if you have ever found a solution to this problem?

I'm having the same issue at the moment and also have the XFX 4850 XXX edition.

Hey,

Resurrecting again! I have this problem as well. Did you get it sorted? Mine runs games for a few minutes and then the black screen and the monitor also goes off. Sound runs for a few seconds then buzzes. Need to hard reset to get back into windows. Event viewer shows nothing and temperatures seem fine.

System:
Windows 7 64bit
Asus M5A99X
X4 955
HIS 6870 IceQ X Turbo
8GB XMS3
Asus Xonar DX
650w OCZ ZS

Tried reinstalling drivers and flashing bios as well but no success. It's so frustrating! Any ideas?

Thanks
