Pc crashes when watching a movie (with pics)

When im watching an avi file, quite often the video messes up and the mouse icon gets really distorted, then my pc just crashes. does anyone know what this could be??
I do have my pc overclocked, but its strange because the only problem i have is when im watching movies! games like cod4, supreme commander, bf2 all work fine for hours on end. then i go to watch an avi file and everything 1st goes graphicaly distorted, then my pc crashes??

codecs installed?
get cccp for all your codec needs

Does this happen with *all* avi files?
Have you tried updateing your graphics drivers?
What application are you playing your avi file in?
Use gspot to identify the codecs of said avi..

yeah it does happen with all of them. sometimes it happens straight away, sometimes it happens like 10 mins into it.

all my drivers are updated! and i use the latest version of divX

Have you installed more than one codec pack or have they all been individual codecs?

well i just managed to take an ss and save it whilst my pc was about to crash from it. when my pc restared the ss i took looks normal, like theres nothing wrong

try vlc media player.

I had a similar problem a while back and it turned out to be a drm problem I think. Also had something similar with a graphics driver too.

yeah i have set everything to default in bios, fixed it. i might try and give my ram some more juice, see if that sorts it

Works with just about every media file type conceived, i've never had it freeze up on me before and is about all I use nowadays.

well the default settings didnt fix it in the end, tried lc player and it seems ok now just watched a whole film with no probs

Then i suspect it was just an issue with the video player/codecs, i doubt your oc had anything to do with it. Which video player had you been using before?

online movies still does it tho!?

i WAS using media player classic
and i have windows media player 11 for my music, which i think could be handling online movies which stream too. wonder if its worth uninstalling windows media player completely

When you say streaming movies is that as in using the media player inside your browser or streaming it a media player like windows media player?

Don't suppose you are using vista 64bit? I had a problem where any DVDs or video files i watched using windows media player 11 upon installing vista would freeze up and the mouse would distort much like your problem.

Hi, well it seems to go on and off. Its now doing it in vlc player aswel as online streaming vids like youtube. I took some pics of what actually happens in the middle of watching a film

1st it comes up with this.. the movie is still playing and i can still hear the sound:

Then when i minimize it, the curser looks like this:

Then after a thew seconds, the pc just freez's

When im watching streaming vids on a website being youtube, only the video does what is in pic1, the mouse also does whats in pic2

anyone got any ideas?? its just strange how it goes on and off

Can you try play some games for 1hr or so and check if it happens with games ?
or do some 3dmark test if u got it. Short 30-40min prime blend will do too.
This way at least we can be sure that all the hardware is fine, then we can try some other software related options.
