Had some problems for a week or two with my pc crashing at random times. Discovered that one of the hard disks was getting iffy (HDDLife) - in fact it eventually warned me on start-up that it was about to fail, so I replaced it. Thought the problem as fixed.
Since then though it has not been much better. But it still crashes randomly, sometimes after 8 hours of running. I've tried replacing the cable to the hard disks but it made no difference.
Quite often won't restart, "can't find disk", "display type not recognised", "PRESS ANY KEY TO REBOOT".
I had suspected the heat at the moment, so I've got the side of the pc off and a couple of fans blowing into it. I've got the speed of the processor turned down and installed CPUCool. The temp graphs recorded by ASUS Probe don't show the temps going up before it fails.
When I get the 'cannot find disk" message it shows as that in the BIOS screen before anything has actually loaded, so it looks like there may be a hardware problem.
I get the same thing if I boot into Windows ME, so its unlikely to be a virus etc.
Could this just be the CMOS battery which is getting low perhaps? Or is a motherboard intermittent failure more likely. Any other suggestions?
If if could be the motherboard, does anyone know a good replacement for an Asus A7V8x which doesn't cost too much. I'm hoping to nurse this pc along for a few more months before replacing it.
Regards,
