for quite some time my pc has been crashing when i play games.i was sure it was my gpu so i cleaned it fully but the problem still persisted so i changed the gpu from my old 9800pro to a 3850 512mb card.since i got the card it has played games ok but the last day or 2 it keeps crashing when playing fear and basically reboots.i have run catalyst to determine good overclock stability ect and that seems fine so am wondering if its my cpu.its a socket 478 p4(pre prescot) 3.0 and when its been rebooting its been showing upto 64 degrees temp so am wondering if trying an arctic cooling freezer pro heatsink would do the trick over the standard reference cooler.is 64 degrees too much or should i be looking elsewhere?
other specs are ide hdd,460w psu and the whole system is about 5 years old(x800 gpu had just come out)

any ideas?

thanks for the quick reply, passed that burn test so would seem the cpu isnt the problem?

what about the new gpu?

3850 512

669mhz core
829mhz memory

overclocked through overdrive in ccc to

709mhz cpu
939mhz ram

did the test and shows as passed

what else can it be?the ram is 2 new 3200 geil ram modules but had the crash problems before i changed them.

could my ide hdd be the problem?its over 5 years old and has had windows reinstalled a dozen times, once lately so is only about 20% full if than.

If you had the freezing before i dont think the new graphics card is the problem.

Use driversweeper or someting similar to wipe the graphics drivers and update to the newest ones.

check already done that, uninstalled old drivers before i installed the new ones then checked for updates ect ect

have you changed Processor recently?

I have the same problem I moved from a 2.4ghz Northwood to 3.0ghz Prescott (only cost £20) And I have had no end of trouble, It constantly crashes during gaming its partly to do with my DFI board not fully supporting Prescott cpu's it'll happily accept HT Northwood but seems to struggle like mad on Prescott.

Still I have my new gaming machine in two weeks so im happy to run my comp into the ground.

same cpu and motherboard since pc was built 5+ years ago.

is 64 degrees ok on a p4??

think i basically need to build a new pc sooner rather than later when finances allow

Ah ok

If its pre Prescott its probably a Northwood cpu & 64 Degrees is a bit warm, the great thing about Northwood's were they ran nice and cool if you'd of said it was a prescott at that temp id say it would be fine.

Clean off all the old thermal paste apply some new stuff and reseat the Heatsink, if your temps havent come down maybe look at the fan and see if thats still performing.

Other than that I dont really have much more I can add matey :( maybe your comp is just dying like mine and the best route is to build a new budget rig.

Just dont go down the route I did by swapping out parts and changing bits on your current system by the time your finished you've spent exactly the same amount as it would cost to just build a new one.

Oh and the AGP 3850 is amazing I have one too vive le 3850

Have you tried mem-test to check your memory for any problems.
Also is possible to try another power supply.

well on fear it only crashes and reboots when the game autosaves if that gives any more clues?

yeah is a northwood p4 3.0 800fsb.i get lots of dust in my case so end up cleaning the fan and heatsink out every few months but its been done recently.think im gonna get a more high performance heatsink and fan and see what happens there then start buying bits to upgrade the lot
