pc crashing on login screen help please

Hi, sorry if this is in the wrong section but im having a problem booting up windows XP and really need some help.

I recently had a virus which kinda took over my pc anyway i found a fix for it, loaded tthe pc in safe mode ran the program and when it came to disk clean up the pc crashed.
I then restarted the pc and since then i've bene having the problem of the pc taking forever for the login screen at the start to come on and when it does the keyboard and mouse both stop working, and the pc crashes.

Is there anyway i can sort this out without a format.

Please help if you can.

Try booting into safe mode, create an new account to login in to, then delete the old account. Failing that a clean install is best after a bad virus.

also try using your XP install disk and use the repair console. It may get you into windows if you need to recover any files before the clean install.
