PC crashing when installing drivers???

Hi, i have a Sound blaster Live 5.1(not the best i know but better than onboard, i think) when i put it in and windows boots up the popup comes on in the bottom corner found new hardware, it then tries to install the driver but when it does so windows just crashes and i have to reboot. Does anyone know how to fix this or is the card dead? Just need something to put me on till i upgrade.

I'm getting this after reinstalling XP with Realtek ac'97 drivers. Tried about three different versions.

No mate i ended up binning the card and getting an X-Fi instead.

Did you disable onboard sound in BIOS before booting up windows with a Soundblaster? Forgetting to disable that can cause the problem you wrote about...
