Hi guys

I upgraded my PC from Windows 7 Ultimate, using the Windows 8 consumer preview (as I will be having Windows 8 pro for Christmas), however, when I try to reformat using my Windows 7 DVD I just get stuck.

Essentially, I "press any key to boot from disc", the Windows DVD loads the necessary files and I get a black screen. From here the PC needs to be hard reset to start again. In doing this I get a "over clock fail press f1" message, but I believe that's a red herring as I don't OC.

Any ideas? I would like to reformat or at least format the drives before I get my new copy, and start again fresh. OS is currently on a Vertex 4 SSD with apps and documents on a RAID 0 array.

Thanks

No. If I don't boot from the disc it will load windows as normal.

Should I erase the SSD first? How can I do this without the windows disc?

Use Parted Magic on a cd or usb drive to erase, then install win7 or win8 from a usb drive with Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool.

Thanks! I have a CD with gparted on, I'll give that a try.

Insert the Disk, follow instructions and it will give you option to delete the partitions and install a fresh copy of windows.
No need for other Software for wiping the SSD.

This is what I usually do but I currently can't get to that point when I boot from disc.

What SSD?

Use the vendor provided tools and Secure Erase it. OCZ provide a bootable linux environment for this for example.

You should never 'long format' an SSD in a conventional manner, you wear the NAND. The vendor tools will send a specific voltage to the NAND and instantly re-set them all to a blank state.

I'll take a look at downloading the tool from OCZ, thanks.

I have at least managed to delete the partition on the SSD, delete my RAID on my mechanical with a bootable GParted CD.

This has allowed me to reinstall Windows 7 (my original aim), so come christmas I'll just use the OCZ tool to wipe and install Windows 8 again.

Thanks for the replies :)
