hi all,

just wondering possible causes for this problem p.c. so i know what parts to get.

p.c. wont power on through power on button, no fans spin up but the led is green on the motherboard showing it's getting power even though the psu wont fire up (fans arn't even moving on the psu).

swapped psu with another working psu and now that psu powers up, cpu and case fans run, but no video signal from on board video and so can't see post screen.
the harddisks and cd drives are not running thou and there are no bleeps from the motherboard. so i think it's not getting to post even.

i was thinking the psu is dead and some motherboard parts are dead like onboard video and whatevers in charge of post bleep errors.
but even if the motherboard worked and it was the cpu or ram that was fried, wouldn't post still work and then bleep like hell?

Definitely sounds like the first PSU is broken. What make was the broken PSU? What is the spec of the machine it was previously powering? How long was it working for? Did you have any rebooting issues or anything strange?

Do you have a speaker attached to the motherboard?

Have you tried restting cmos?

A motherboard will not run without CPU. It'll run to a point without RAM, drives and other items but the motherboard uses the CPU to actually run the code contained within the motherboard's chips.

some cheap crap psu thats 300 watt, so will need a proper psu replacement i know some quality psus out there.

its and old spec pc, celeron D 478 socket, 1gig ram at 333hz, worked for ages and gone dead all of a sudden, thats why i think the psu dead and may have damaged other parts.

speakers built into the mobo

tried resetting cmos and replacing battery with a known working 1

crap so could be either cpu or motherboard, good job replacements r cheap for both.
