PC Dead?

This is for a mate of mine who can't access the internet.

His says his PC won't start up but just the cpu fan tries to spin and it stops. He said he put his comp on sleep mode and when he returned to it it died!

Basically, what can be the cause of this?

I told him maybe the power supply has gone dead. Since it's a 550w cheapo make.

His specs are:

Q6600
Not sure on motherboard
4GB
GTX 260

i agree with you it sounds like the psu has died!

Remove the main ATX connector and all other connections and link out pins 13 & 14 on the ATX connector, have a fan installed on one of the molex and see what happens, alternate can you test another psu with the system.

If he put it in sleep then maybe it's just having trouble 'waking up'? Have you tried turning it off via unplugging it - or even just holding down the power button?

This happened to me before, sleep mode sometimes is a bit wrong.

Yeah, he said he's tried everything and still no work.

So is it the power supply?

I will check it with my spare one lying around.

PSU or motherboard.

Try a spare PSU first.

Give the PSU a sniff, it may give a faint smell of burning if it's had it.

Sleep mode gives me a blue screen every time I try to use it, annoying to say the least.
