my pc switched itself off this morning, tripped the breaker in the flat too

Tried another lead (must have blown the plug fuse) ...tripped the breaker again

Is it likely to be the PSU?

It's about 8 years old so could be anything I suppose

Thanks....can't find a paper clip but tried with solder and a piece of wire, neither were a great fit in the plug but pretty sure the psu is confirmed dead

Been doing a random beeping/siren noise for a while now, guess it was on its way out

Need to get one of those sata USB things now as need some things on the HDD tomorrow!

cheers, was an easy diagnosis in the end!

going to build a new pc eventually but was thinking of either getting a cheap psu now to get it working again, or a good psu that I can use in the next build

just now its an abit ip35 pro with 8800 GTS...the board has an 8 pin connector, do modern boards still use that?

ie is it possible to get a good quality psu that will work with the ip35 pro, but use it for a (probably) z270 board in a months time or something?

cheers, I'm so out of touch with what plug is for what etc!

there's the 24 pin connector I did the paperclip test with, but there's also an 8 pin on the board, both hardwired to the psu, then there's the hdd/gfx connectors that are detachable

typical, got a ton of work to do next few weeks, otherwise I'd take time to build a nice pc, good things come to those who wait...etc!

will have to research ryzen5s, thanks plec

cheers Jim, missed all the next day delivery of the cheapies...so may as well get a decent one on Wednesday
