Hi all,

Long time since ive posted in here but would be really grateful for some advice as my PC has just died spectacularly and need some help pinning down the problem.

I was playing a game and it just powered off and would not switch on again. Now the system has been stable under current setting for years.

Since trying to diagnose Ive removed GPU and all HDDs/optical drives to no effect. Ive pulled the memory and used one stick on each bank also with no effect. Ive reset the CMOS with no effect.

All the lights are powered up on the motherboard when the system is receiving power and if I try and switch it on with the power button the power light comes on for a less than a second and you can see the fans try to spin but then it shuts off immediately. If I then try the power switch again nothing at all happens unless I turn off the PSU/wall socket after which it will do the above again.

So far I'm thinking mobo, CPU or PSU but ive got no spares to swap out and test on so if anyone can offer any wise insight into which its likely to be I would be most grateful.

Specs:

i7 950 @4ghz
6Gb DDR3 RAM.
Gigabyte GA X58A UD5
ATI 7970
500gb HDD
1.5TB HDD
500gb Samsung evo 850
2x Blu-ray drives
Corsair HX 850W

Many thanks for the advice

i would say its the mobo.
given they are like rocking horse poo to find the only option i see is a full upgrade.

test the psu like this.

Agreed but until you get another PSU, or have tested the one you have to confirm it's state, you're not going to know if other components are affected.

Which is why I suggested he test the one he has :)

If his fails the paperclip/green-black wire test then he knows that he needs to buy a new one. Then he can go about testing his other kit if needed.

Well like a fool I neglected to consider the wife's PC as its got a full size PSU in it despite being mini-itx and tiny! Have ripped that out and the PC is now booting so must be the psu! Luckily 6 years old with a 7 year warranty!

Suprised to find out it was the PSU, would have said Mobo myself.

Wow that is lucky, not often you get that long a warranty. Which manufacturer is that out of interest?

Yeah I was surprised too given that the mobo appeared to be getting power.

It appears their current HX series has a 10 year warranty which is even more impressive!

Thanks for the input guys

Glad you are sorted, I thought it was the PSU as I have seen the same issue before. Try and get Corsair to replace it with the RXi series. Good PSU's and silent for all intents and purposes; fan doesn't start spinning until under decent load.
