Hello.

A friend of mine has a PC that he has had problems with for a while now. Basically his PC would randomly crash and he wouldnt be able to turn it on again for a while. Sometimes after 5 minutes, other times for hours. Also when his PC would crash he would leave it off for a while and then when he turns it on it could take a random time from the time he presses the power button before it actually switches on, without touching the power button a second time.

A few days ago his PC crashed and hasnt been able to turn it on since. It's just completely dead. Iv'e checked inside and everything is plugged in and looks normal, no obvious hardware faults.

His specs are Pentium D 2ghz, 2gb Ram and i think a 7600GS not too sure, but it was a budget card in the 7x series i know that much. Now i believe the problem is his PSU, he only has a 300W psu inside. I think this is a bit low for his specs but thats why im here for your help.

Any ideas please? Thank you.

Definitely sounds to me like the PSU could be the problem. Is it a decent 300W or a no-name one? I'd try swapping out the PSU.

I believe it's just some cheapo no-name PSU since he bought that PC for pretty cheap at the time.

Im a bit wary of trying my PSU in his PC since im still using AGP/A64 and he is using PCI-E with a Pentium D. Would i still be able to rig it up to his PC ok?

99% sure that's the problem, then. Pentium Ds are some of the most power-hungry CPUs you can get... a decent 300W could handle it fine, but a cheapo one could well cause problems.

Your PSU should work OK if it's powerful enough and has the right connectors (4-pin CPU), but it's your PSU so your choice :) Personally I'd just get him to buy a decent PSU!
